George was born February 13, 1925, in Whiting, Indiana, to George and Eleanor Kochis. A natural leader and athlete, he quarterbacked in high school and was president of Whiting High School Class of 1942. He joined the Navy, and they sent him to Wayne State Medical School, and upon graduation, to serve as a physician on a destroyer/minesweeper.
In December 1951, George married Joanne Cook, the love of his life and wife of nearly 60 years. They lived in Philadelphia where they raised their daughters, and George practiced child and adult psychoanalysis. In the mid-1970s he served as President of the Psychoanalytic Society of Philadelphia. In 1978, the family moved to Houston, Texas, where he continued his practice until 2010.
George was an avid golfer--after losing his left arm in an accident, he taught himself to play one-handed. And he was very good.
George is survived by his loving wife Joanne; daughters Jean Kochis, Betsy Buecker, Catherine Kochis, and Patricia Green; grandson, Paul Gandin; nephews, George and James Kucka, and nieces, Mary Beth Markovich and Kathleen Murzyn.
George was strong in every sense of the word. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends and colleagues.
A celebration of life will be held 10:00am Friday at Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel.
