Geraldine Mae Sturges (Jeri) was born on September 12, 1940, in Axtell, Nebraska. She left this world peacefully, in the presence of those she loved, on January 17, 2026, at her home in Willis, Texas. She joins her parents, her brother, many treasured friends and family, her son John, and her beloved husband of 64 years, Sandy. Left to carry her memory are her Sister Dorris Murray, her brother, Lee Parriott, her son, George Sturges, Jr., (Boni), daughter, Marilyn Wisnoskie (Don), 7 grandchildren (Jacob, Kimberly, Missy, Brad, Hunter, Clayton, Brylin), 13 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored.
Jeri moved to Bakersfield as a young girl, attended local schools and North High School. Her mother died at an early age and Jeri took on the role of nurturer for her brothers, Lee and Bob, and sister Doris. Jeri met the love of her life, George Sturges (Sandy) at a First Presbyterian Church youth group. They married and together had three children: George Jr., Marilyn, and John Sturges.
Jeri was a devoted wife and mother. Her and Sandy were a team when it came to their family. The kids never wanted to hear the words, “I’ll talk to your father,” because Sandy would always back Jeri up. As parents, Jeri and Sandy worked together. They prayed before meals. Sundays were family days spent together. The traditions Jeri and Sandy started of vacationing as a family in Clearlake and Shaver Lake are being carried on with their great grandchildren.
Jeri was a happy, funny, creative, and wise parent who learned early how to stay one step ahead of her three children. She had an amazing talent for being a mother. She knew just what to do for each child. She pushed them to be their best, she ensured self-sufficiency, and she allowed you the consequences of your own actions. She kept her children active and challenged, which was not easy to do if you know her children. Jeri modeled and expected a high moral character, behavior you can be proud of, respect for all people, modest clothing, and a good work ethic.
As a grandma and great grandma, Jeri was involved and intentional about quality time with her grandchildren. She fished, directed plays, read, did crafts, played games, cooked for and cleaned up after her grandchildren. She was active with them. She kept traditions alive and created new ones. Jeri never tired of serving her family.
Jeri was a woman of many talents. She painted, sewed, and had a flare for decorating. She played bridge with a group of dear friends and could play almost any card game. She played tennis, water skied and tolerated snow skiing. She loved music and had fond memories of playing the harpsicord with her father. She had an adventurous spirit and traveled the world. She would often recall the years she had organized craft days, homework help, and reading sessions for the children who lived in the Sturges’ apartments. Jeri liked helping people and being of service.
Jeri had high expectations for herself. She was always impeccably dressed, stylish, and classy. She had good morals, loved the Lord, and cared about being a good person who did the right thing. She led by example and was a mentor and gift to us all. She will be remembered fondly and greatly missed.
Jeri will be laid to rest next to her husband Sandy and son John on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 2:00. Greenlawn Cemetery 3700 River Blvd. Bakersfield, Ca. Afterwards, we will gather at the Sturges Ranch to share stories and celebrate her life.
