Imogene was born on September 9, 1932 and raised on a farm in eastern Grimes County. She began her education at Smyth Institute, a one teacher school. She subsequently entered Montgomery High School and graduated in 1948 at the age of 15. After studying at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio,Texas, she returned to Montgomery County and married Edgar Giesinger. While owning and operating City Grocery, a local Montgomery grocery store and helping her husband start and manage a timber business, she continued her studies receiving a BS Degree in Education from Sam Houston State University in 1960. She subsequently was awarded a Masters Degree in Education and completed post graduate work in Educational Management at both Sam Houston State University and St. Thomas University.
After 16 years as a classroom teacher in both Montgomery and Conroe districts, Imogene moved into administration as the curriculum director of the newly opened O. A. Reaves Intermediate School. She then served as the principal of Anderson Elementary School for two years before opening BB Rice Elementary School where she served as a principal for 9 years. Then at the age of 56 she retired (for the first time ) to spend more time with her grandchildren, husband and ranch. Not ready to slow down, she soon returned to CISD as Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education.
During her tenure as an educator she received many awards and accolades, the highest of which was having Giesinger Elementary named in her honor.
Imogene had many interests outside of education. With her husband and others, Sam Houston Trail Riders Association was founded in 1955 to perpetuate the tradition of pioneer cattlemen in their annual trek with their herds. The trail ride continues today with a trek from Montgomery, Texas to Downtown Houston.
She was a wonderful grandmother who never missed a first day of kindergarten, cooked cowboy stew over an open fire and taught her grandchildren the value of education and to love the ranch.
Imogene also loved to quilt and provided beautiful quilts for her entire family. One of her favorite pastimes was hosting a quilting bee monthly in her home and enjoying the many friends and relationships she developed with these ladies.
In retirement she was active in ranching where she supervised her beloved High Hope Ranch. In addition she served as a part time supervisor of the student teacher program at Texas A&M University.
The family would like to thank her faithful friend and caregiver Tammy Sohl and her ranch partner Buddy Lane. We would also like to thank her life long friends Phyllis and Mike Saly for their friendship and support.
“Things I have never learned to do: sing , swim, and back a trailer—I just leave this to the experts”....Imogene Giesinger
