He served in the United States Navy (1956-1960) during which time he was assigned to the USS Hector (AR-7). This ship was in the VALCAN class of repair ships. It rendered vital fleet repair services to U.S. and friendly naval forces in Southeast Asia. Following honorable discharge he worked as a mechanic for several companies including Brown and Root and ultimately he worked with his father as a transmission specialist.
John particularly enjoyed fishing from his power boat on Lake Conroe. For many years he was known to prepare complete barbecue meals to the delight of family and friends. In time he was less active and enjoyed watching Western movies and playing with and being entertained by Vickie.
He is survived by his brother, James Thomas Rabun, Fripp Island, South Carolina, nephew Lance Jeffrey Rabun, Villa Park, California and numerous cousins. He is also survived by partner in life Shirley Penny and her daughters Theresa Penny Stewart and Sherry Penny.
