On December 11, 1956, Karen Elaine Treybig made her debut into the world as the third child of Harold and Jeanette Treybig. She was the first child born among the Houston congregation of the Radio Church of God that was started nine months earlier by Wayne Cole.
The Treybigs already had two boys, so Jeanette was especially thrilled to have a daughter. Karen grew up in the country outside of Houston on four acres of land where the family had a cow, chickens and a large garden. She graduated from Cypress-Fairbanks High School in 1975 and entered Ambassador College, Big Sandy, that fall.
When the Big Sandy campus closed, Karen transferred to Pasadena where she met Glenn Doig who was on a ministerial Sabbatical. They married in August 1978 and were sent to Canada, then to Alaska, where Glenn was an assistant pastor in Anchorage.
They moved to Soldotna to pastor that congregation. During those years Justin and Brian were born. In the following years the family moved to Kansas (where Ethan was born), then to Louisiana, California and finally back to Houston in 1998.
Karen and Glenn’s three boys, Justin, Brian and Ethan, all reside in the greater Houston area. Karen adored her three granddaughters, born to Brian and Crystal (Whitley) Doig, Marie, Jane and Kate. The girls enjoyed a standing ‘play date’ on Monday afternoons at Mimi’s house, followed by dinner—times that Karen also cherished.
Karen was athletic and enjoyed music. She learned to play piano as a child and sang in church choirs and small groups that she often helped organize for special music at church services. She had a sharp mind, was organized and worked in accounting until she retired in January 2024. After Harold Treybig died, Karen took over as Treasurer for the Houston North congregation.
Karen loved to travel, spending time with friends and family. She observed the Feast at a variety of locations and took several cruises to different parts of the world. Most recently she enjoyed a cruise on the Danube River through Eastern Europe and had plans for a month-long cruise in the South Pacific.
Karen’s smile and infectious laughter are sorely missed. She died in her sleep on September 8, 2025. She had told several close friends that is how she would like to die. God gave her what she wanted—just way too soon for so many of us. What a joy it will be when she awakens in the first resurrection as a spirit being at Christ’s return!
