Maryann was born on January 21, 1944, in Astoria, New York. She was the youngest of three children, born to Frank and Anna McCarthy Maloney— descendants of proud Irish immigrants who came to this country with little but built a life through hard work, love, and determination. Though the family didn’t have much in material wealth, they were rich in faith, laughter, and strong family bonds.
Maryann adored her two older brothers, Jim and Bill. They shared an unbreakable connection throughout their lives, and she cared for them deeply. Caring for others was at the very heart of Maryann’s nature, a quality that stayed with her forever. From a young age, she looked after those she loved—her brothers and her father always knew they could count on “Toots,” the affectionate nickname her father gave her, a name that became synonymous with love and loyalty. When her parents grew older, Maryann and Paul welcomed her parents into their home, continuing the love and compassion she was known for with grace and elegance.
She attended St. Cyrle Catholic Academy for high school—a traditional, nun-operated Catholic boarding school that instilled discipline and faith in all its students. Even in this strict environment, Maryann’s spirited personality shined through. Attending with one of her lifelong friends Millie, she had a gift for making others laugh and finding lighthearted moments wherever she went. One story that became family legend was the time she decided to leave her mark in history—quite literally. In the school’s main hallway, there was a copy of the Declaration of Independence on display. Maryann boldly signed her full name, “Maryann Maloney,” in that very book, where it remained for all to see. To this day, that story is told with a smile, a perfect example of Maryann’s playful nature and bold charm.
The story of how Maryann met the love of her life, Paul, is one that impeccably captures her wit and confidence. Introduced by mutual friends, they met one day when Paul had just gotten home from work and was sitting in his car. When Maryann noticed he had taken off his watch, she slyly picked it up and quipped, “If you want this back, you’d better take me out later.” That simple, playful gesture began a lifelong romance. On August 17, 1963, Maryann and Paul were married, beginning a love story that lasted 61 wonderful years.
True to her generous spirit, Maryann wasn’t just content finding her own soulmate—she decided to play matchmaker, introducing Paul’s twin brother to her lifelong friend, June. The two married as well, creating a bond between the families that turned friends into sisters. Maryann and June although distance by life were always inseparable, sharing countless adventures together, from family vacations to girls’ trips, creating memories filled with laughter and love.
Maryann and Paul were blessed with four sons who were the pride and joy of her life. Her love for her boys knew no bounds, and she dedicated herself to raising them with compassion, humor, and a strong sense of family.
In 1980, Maryann and Paul made a big move from New York to Texas, following Paul’s job. It was a leap of faith that opened a new chapter in their lives. As her children grew and left home, Maryann devoted her time to volunteering and giving back to her community through programs like Meals on Wheels, Mother’s Day Out, and the March of Dimes. Her caring nature extended far beyond her family—she touched the lives of everyone she met.
Eventually, Maryann entered the workforce full-time. She started at Kroger in the pharmacy department and, through hard work and determination, worked her way up to become HR and Hiring Manager, eventually helping to run the company’s flagship store in The Woodlands. Later, she joined Continental Airlines, where she worked as a corporate booking agent until retirement. Maryann loved her job—not just for the work itself but because it allowed her to help people. And in true Maryann fashion, she always found a way to make the most of every opportunity. Whether it was scoring VIP tickets to an event or planning the perfect trip, she had a knack for creating experiences that brought joy to herself and those around her.
Maryann lived life to the fullest. She loved to travel, whether it was cruising with friends, visiting Vegas with her “girls,” heading to the casino with her dear friend Susan, or traveling the world with family. She approached every adventure with excitement and energy, making every trip memorable.
To her family, Maryann was so much more than a wife, mother, or NANA—she was the heart and soul of the family. The Energizer Bunny who kept everyone going. The one who always knew what you needed, even when you didn’t know yourself. She was strength, love, humor, and grace all rolled into one remarkable woman.
Maryann passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 61 years, Paul; her 4 beloved sons Robert, married to his wife Kimberly, William married to his wife Siphallen, Paul jr, and Thomas married to his wife Amanda; 10 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. The world is a little less bright without her, but the love she gave and the joy she brought will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
Maryann’s life was a shining example of love, strength, and joy. She taught us the importance of family, laughter, and living each day to the fullest. While our hearts ache without her here, they are filled with gratitude for the countless memories and the love she freely gave.
If there’s one lesson she’d want us to carry forward, it’s her favorite saying “Never let anyone steal your joy.” Those words reflect the way she lived- with optimism, grace, and unshakable spirit.
Rest peacefully, Maryann. Your joy, your laughter, and your love will live on in us forever.
