She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles K. Petty; her parents, Helen and Walter King; and her brother, Vernon King.
She is survived by her children, Karen Pyles, Kim Hogeboom and husband Mike, son Kenneth Petty; as well as her sisters, Irene Baker and Dorothy King; and brother, C.B. King. She has eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie was a loving mother and wife and managed to take care of a home, a large vegetable garden and three children. Marie loved her flowers and spent many hours outside with her roses, various flower beds, and ensured her bluebonnets thrived and flourished throughout her yard. You did not dare mow any area of the yard containing a bluebonnet until those pods had dried and opened. If you did, you would hear about it and she would not let you forget it either, Just ask Kenneth & Mike.
Marie thoroughly enjoyed her trips to the Naskila Casino in Livingston, Texas and was always ready to go when she heard the name mentioned. And she always did pretty well, coming home with a few extra bucks.
Christmas time was always fun for her as she always enjoyed finding the stuffed toys that would sing and dance. It became an annual tradition between her and Mike to see who could find the most obnoxious and annoying toys.
Marie loved to travel and spent many years traveling the world with her husband Charles, living abroad in places such as Malta, The Canary Islands, England, and Iran as well as many other locales. These locales also included traveling with her children. She was definitely one brave woman to travel abroad with three small children. That was not for the faint of heart. On more than one occasion the youngest child Kenneth assisted in expediating the family through customs without any issues whatsoever.
In her later years she enjoyed traveling to Panama with her daughter Kim and son-in-law Mike to visit Linda and Russ Hunt. She was always sure to give Russ a honey-do list of all the things he needed to complete before her next visit. She especially loved the mountain village of El Valle and the farmer’s market located in the town center.
Marie loved life and was a very strong, and sometimes stubborn, independent woman who had a lot of heart and was always ready for an adventure. She loved all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always so excited to see them and spend time with them.
We love you Mom and you will be forever in our hearts. Until we meet again.
A visitation for Mavis will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Metcalf Funeral Directors, 1801 East White Oak Terrace, Conroe, Texas 77304. A graveside service and interment will occur Friday, April 19, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Copeland Chapel Cemetery, Montgomery, Texas.
