Robert (Bob) G. Baer, 86, of Rosenberg, TX, entered into eternal rest on October 27, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Baer, whom he loved dearly. Bob is survived by a daughter; a son Robby (Ann); two beloved grandkids and a host of friends. Those friends that knew him best were constantly reminded of his admiration of his children and grandchildren.
A lifelong, multi-generational Texan, Bob’s life’s experiences are the stuff that should be recorded in books. As a young child, his Quaker grandmother taught him gun safety and the proper use of firearms. He and his trusty .22 rifle kept his family well fed during WWII. Maturing on his grandfather’s farm and ranch in the Rio Grande Valley, he had no idea of the great adventures that lay ahead. Later, he was able to work as a cowboy in Lander, Montana, while attending Colorado A&M, where he graduated with a degree in Forestry Management. His first assignment was in Glacier National Park, which offered a lifetime of experiences and memories. He was later hired as a horse wrangler for Hollywood. His first meeting with not-yet- President Ronald Reagan, was to suborn to the future President’s wishes and ride horses late in the evenings. Years later, Bob Baer, along with several members of the Texas Army and the National Rifle Association, would present President Reagan with a custom Kentucky flintlock made by Texan Christopher Hirsch.
He was a cowboy, a forester, a mineral developer, a custom gunmaker of note and helped to pioneer the East Texas lumber industry, just to name a few. He was a lifelong conservationist, Life member of the NRA, as well as, serving on its Board of Directors. He was very instrumental in the formation of the Institute for NRA Legislative Action. He also trained NRA Firearms Safety Instructors. But his greatest happiness was his friendships with many great men and women, among them Charles (Skeeter) Skelton, Bart Skelton, John and Jeanne Wooters, Finn and Berit Aagard, Bill Pace, Neal Knox, Jeff Knox, John Taffin, Bill Jordan, all The Shootists, Bill Taylor, Robert Churay, Senator Jerry Patterson, Alan Harton, Keith DeHart, Stephen DeHart, Dean Olson, Tracy Sanders, and too many more to mention.
He will be long remembered and sorely missed by all.
