

Steve graduated from LaGrange High School in Lake Charles in 1968, and then went on to McNeese State University, where he received a degree in wildlife management. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Bainbridge, Maryland and Corpus Christi, Texas. Steve was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the owner/operator and a professional guide at Southern Traditions, Inc. hunting camp at Goose Lake in Carlyss, Louisiana. He was a prolific writer, with several articles published in Outdoor Life and Field and Stream magazine. Steve had a great love of sports, but his true passion was always baseball. He was on a state championship little league baseball team in Lake Charles and would later coach Conroe youth baseball for several years. After receiving his teaching certification at McNeese, he taught science and coached football, golf, basketball, and track at Peet Junior High.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents: Lela and Haley Kohler, and nephew: Dustin Merritt.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 27 years Linda Kohler; children: Steven Douglas Kohler II, Kyle Laughlin Kohler and Mary Allison Kohler; Siblings: Sandra Earthman (Robert), Karl Kohler (Shelia), Michael Kohler (Elaine), and Linda Bonner; cousin: John Dudney, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 23 at Metcalf Funeral Home from 5 – 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m. A military burial will be held at Houston National Cemetery on Monday, October 27 at 11:15 a.m.
A memorial service will held in Lake Charles at Johnson’s funeral home at a future date.
