Born on October 21, 1946, in Bergenfield, New Jersey, Karen grew up on the shores of Point Pleasant Beach before her family moved to Florida, where she attended Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale. She went on to earn her Master's Degree in Education from Florida State University. Karen lived a life defined by service, creativity, and a deep love for community. She was a proud member of Royal Palm Christian Church, where she served on the Board of the Royal Palm Pre-School and as an Elder in the Church — roles that reflected her lifelong commitment to nurturing others in faith and in learning.
Karen dedicated her professional life to education, beginning her teaching career at New River Middle School before moving on to South Plantation High School. She ultimately found her long professional home at Coral Springs High School, where she served with distinction as the Department Head of the Home Economics Department for many years. Her passion for teaching extended well beyond her retirement, when she generously gave her time mentoring beginning teachers throughout Broward County, shaping the next generation of educators with the same warmth and wisdom she brought to her classroom.
Outside of her professional life, Karen's days were rich with the things she loved most. She was a talented quilter and longtime member of the Coral Springs Quilt Guild. She was also a skilled basket weaver, bringing the same care and artistry to her craft that she gave to everything she pursued. She dabbled in painting, expressing her creativity across many mediums. A gourmet cook with a gift for hospitality, she delighted in entertaining friends. Her sense of adventure took her around the world, and she especially treasured cruising to new destinations with her beloved husband, Jim. Closer to home, she was a devoted and spirited Mahjong player.
Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Meier, and her parents, Ruth and Jack Reiner. She is survived by her proud and loving son, Rob Johnson, and by the countless lives she touched through decades of teaching, mentorship, faith, and friendship.
She will be deeply missed and long remembered.
