Lawrence S. DeVos, Jr., age 96, of Jupiter and Coral Springs, FL, died peacefully on January 4, 2022, surrounded by his family. A longtime Florida resident, Lawrence was born on July 30, 1925, in New York City, where he spent part of his childhood, as well as in Pennsylvania, and Texas, before graduating from Staunton Military Academy. Lawrence graduated from Georgetown University, and served in the Navy, and the Bureau of Standards, during World War II. He attended Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Pittsburg.
Lawrence worked for Gulf Oil Corporation, as a geophysicist, in Pittsburg, PA, Alberta Canada, and Venezuela. He then changed careers and became a stockbroker in Miami Beach, FL, before becoming manager of the Coral Gables’ office of Thomson & McKinnon. While there, he met Sherre Ayers Adams, and they married in 1954. The couple made their home in Coral Gables, where they raised three sons, and remained there until Sherre’s passing in 1995. He lived out the remainder of his life near family in Palm Beach and later Broward County.
Lawrence’s true passions were stock investments and living in Texas, where he helped established a family business after leaving the brokerage business. He lived a quiet yet full life, and was a man of uncomplicated tastes, with a deep devotion and love for his family.
He is survived by his three sons; Lawrence III, Glen (wife Jane), David (wife Nancy), four grandchildren; Katie Littlejohn (husband Brad), Leslie Blanchard (husband Nick), Lawrence David DeVos, and Michelle DeVos, and four great-grandchildren; Charlotte Littlejohn, Kensley Littlejohn, Elouise Blanchard, and Sophie Blanchard. He is also survived by his sister, Helene Gallagher, and her children, James, Ann, Robert, and William Gallagher.
