Cleveland David Travis Sr., age 89, of Portage, IN passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021. Cleveland was born February 13, 1932 in Dawson, Alabama to the late George Washington and Jenny Myrtle (Dolberry) Travis. On October 15, 1955, he married Alice Mae Brink.
He served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. He will be remembered by his family as the hardest working man in the world. His work ethic was often talked about amongst family and friends. He was able to retire after 40 years of service from Linde Air a division of Union Carbide in East Chicago, and he also worked for 20 years for the City of Munster.
Cleve spent his free time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed listening to country music, watching Alabama football, and family camping trips. He had a compassionate heart and would do what he could to help others in need. He adored his family and worked hard to provide for their needs. He was a kind, caring and compassionate man who was loved dearly and will be missed by many.
Cleve is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Mae Travis; six children, Sharon (Eddie) Fisher, Nancy (Frank) Benton, Juanita (Louis) Alvarado, Cleveland (Lori) Travis Jr., Roger (Sandra) Travis, Tina Newton; 17 grandchildren, Benjamin Travis, Crystal (Dale) Bunton, Josh (Kelly) Fisher, Sean (Amy) Fisher, Joshua (Emily) Benton, Hannah (Christopher) Parrish, Jill (Jeremy) Miller, Amanda (Greg) Borden, Larissa (Nickolas) Bright, Kylie Alvarado, Nicole (Jeremy) Dejesus, Sami Travis, Kyle Young, Zach Travis, Joey Travis, Cody Newton, Keith (Ashley) Newton; 34 great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Jacob, Nickolas, Owen, Kaylee, Kaitlin, Xander, Kelsey, Kaelyn, Kyle, Alexis, Silas, Daniel, Karis, Thomas, Elizabeth, Henry, Caleb, Isaiah, Max, Bryanna, Lendon, Lana, Ariana, Kayden, Nicholas, Lucas, David, Odin, Orion, Oberon, Gotham, and Keaton; one great-great-grandchild Noah; six siblings, Pearl Knight, Glenda Soloman, Joyce Olsen, Daris (Lew) Pleasant, Carol Langston, Alton (Rachel) Travis; along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Cleve is preceded in death by his parents, George W. Travis (GW) and Jenny Myrtle Travis (Mert); four siblings, Edward (Ruth) Travis, Bill Travis, Berthel (Harvey) McGaha, Alvin Travis; one special niece Ellie Koenmann; one grandchild, Bobby Alvarado.
Family and friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home - 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307 from 11AM - 1PM, with a funeral service beginning at 1PM to celebrate his life with Rev. Frank Benton. Burial to follow with Military Honors rendered at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
