With deep sadness and love, we announce the passing of Dr. Gerald “Jerry” A. Gayda on the morning of May 12, 2025. Jerry was a man of quiet strength, deep compassion, and remarkable talent. Though trained in medicine, his heart was rooted in the land and animals he so lovingly tended.
A long-time resident of Crown Point, IN, Jerry took over the family farm after the passing of his beloved parents, whom he spoke of often and with deep affection. He poured his energy into the farm and the animals that brought him so much joy. He raised over 100 Belted Galloway cattle—his cherished “oreo cows”—along with seven mules and three horses, all of whom he trained himself. For Jerry, animals were not just responsibilities; they were companions and family.
Jerry earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, and also held a master’s degree from Syracuse University. While his medical training reflected his intelligence and dedication, his greatest fulfillment came from farming, horseback riding, working outdoors, designing and building, and living with purpose and creativity.
He was a true craftsman—meticulous, thoughtful, and imaginative. From woodworking to farm structures, Jerry designed and built with care, even constructing his own barn using lumber he milled from trees on his land. His motto, “Pay attention to details,” was reflected in everything he did, from the way he cared for animals to the precision in his projects.
Jerry was known not only for his many skills but for his generosity in sharing them. He was always ready to lend a hand or offer advice, and his friends often said he made a lasting impression on everyone he met. Though he was never married and had no children, his circle of friends was large and loyal. Jerry had a kind heart, a gentle spirit, and an extraordinary ability to make others feel cared for.
He is survived by his siblings, Dr. Randall C. Gayda (PhD), Dr. Debra P. Gayda (PhD), and Dr. Donald J. Gayda (DO). He will be remembered always as a caring brother, a devoted steward of the land, and a truly one-of-a-kind person whose legacy lives on in every life he touched.
A visitation for Jerry will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307. On Monday, May 19, 2025, a visitation will take place at Chapel Lawn from 9:00 to 10:00 am.
