
Helen Mae Vander Ploeg, age 92, of Lansing, IL was born March 14, 1919 and passed away Saturday, August 27, 2011. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Diehl (nee Vander Ploeg); and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; Garrett and Maggie Vander Ploeg; brothers: Edward and Robert Vander Ploeg; and sister, Mabel Ooms (nee Vander Ploeg). A celebration of Helen's life will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Ave., (one-half mile south of US 30) Schererville, IN with Pastor Mark Prestriedge officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. and are welcome to stay for service at the funeral home. Helen was born in Chicago, IL (Roseland) and was a long time resident of Lansing, IL. She retired from Silvestri Paving/Davis Construction Company as Vice President of the Treasurer/Executive Secretary. Helen was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard from November 4, 1944 to March 12, 1946 during WWII earning the rank of Specialist, Third Class, Transportation. She was decorated with the American Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. Helen was a long time member of Immanuel Reformed Church, Roseland, IL; Bethany Reformed Church, Lynwood, IL and was a supporting friend of Living Springs Community Church in Glenwood, IL.
