

On February 26, 1951, he married the love of his life, Martha Jeanette Elkins, and together they raised four children. He was able to retire after 32 years as an Ironworker from LTV Steel and a member of Local 1011. After retirement, he moved back to the family homestead in London, KY and built five houses for himself and four other family members. He returned to Lake County back in 2010 and enjoyed his time with family. Jim learned to play guitar at an early age. He loved to sing and play music with his good friend, Bill Clark. Together, they hosted an annual jam session for 20 years. He passed his musical talent on to his children and played in numerous bands with his son, Steve. He was an excellent woodworker, craftsman, and made many pieces of beautiful furniture. His other hobbies included creating Moravian stars, and jewelry.
He is survived by his loving family; daughters, Nancy Denise (Adrian) Kuypers, Pamela Renee (Ronald) Minto; son, James Steven (late Diana Lynn) Cheek; grandchildren, Bradley Hodis, Tony (Katherine) Kuypers, Stacey Kuypers, Kevin (Heather) Kuypers, Timothy Kuypers, Angela Kuypers, James Schneider, Malorie (Chris) Porter, James Robert (Sarah) Cheek, Kellie (Roger) Torres, John Obermeyer, Austin Kuta, Steven Ray Myers, Kenneth B. Myers and Melissa Marie Myers; 31 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; brother, Velmer Darrell (Carolynn) Cheek; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends.
Jim is welcomed into eternity by his wonderful wife of 68 years, Martha Cheek; daughter, Martha Diane Gibbon; sisters, Faye Stootsbury, Mildred Brown, Deborah Wyatt, and Joleen Jones; brothers, Bonnie Cheek, Jerry Lee Cheek, Don Alonso Cheek, and Bobby Ray Cheek.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 12:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307, with Pastor Ben Hixson officiating. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Crown Point, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until time of the service at the funeral home.
