John Bindas

John Bindas, age 92, of Valparaiso, formerly of Highland, passed away Friday, November 18, 2011. He is survived by his two granddaughters: Laura Bindas and Kellie (James) Fields, both of Valparaiso; son, James (Sherry) Bindas of Portage; daughter-in-law, Gloria Bindas of Valparaiso; sister, Josephine Stadnik of Hammond; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Bindas was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Bindas (nee Gadish); parents: Joseph and Helen Bindas (nee Evans); brother, Mike Bindas; and two sisters: Mary Borbely and Ann Giecko. Funeral services wil be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Ave., (one-half mile south of US 30) Schererville, IN with Fr. Raymond Sundland officiating. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville. Friends are invited to meet the family on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 2:00- 4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home with a Panahida service at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Bindas was a member of St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Hammond. He was a proud veteran of U.S. Army-Air Corp during WWII and a member of the 350th BSQ and 100th Bombardment Group. Mr. Bindas was a member of American Legion Post #330 of Calumet City, IL and American Legion Post #369 of East Chicago. He was also a member of VFW Post #3029 of Hammond. Mr. Bindas was an avid coin and stamp collector, and he also enjoyed gardening and playing his harmonica. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's loving memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the Disabled American Veterans.
