John "Steve" Vestal was a man who built his place in the world. He was born August 23,1949 in his parents' home in Keytesville, MO. On March 11, 2026, at the age of 76, Steve passed away in Crown Point, IN, leaving behind a legacy as detailed as the many things he created with his own two hands.
Easily recognized by his long hair and ponytail, Steve was a Master Craftsman in every sense of the word. His life’s work was defined by a dedication to his trade and family. For over 55 years, he was a proud and respected member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, where he retired as a Craft Foreman, a career path that included his six years of service in the Air National Guard.
Steve was a devoted family man whose ultimate project was the dream home he and Chris built together. It's a home they filled with love and laughter, celebrating with friends and family. As an artisan, Steve possessed the ability to see the beauty in raw materials. Whether he was shaping wood, crafting stained glass, working with copper or iron, he believed that a handmade life was a life well-lived.
Beyond his workshop, Steve lived full speed with an adventurous heart. He was a familiar sight on his bicycle, completing the 250-mile Katy Trail in five days at the age of 76. When he wasn't on the trail or competing on the pickleball court, he was often behind the wheel of a classic convertible, enjoying road-tripping adventures with the love of his life and their close friends.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Christine Vestal; his son, Christopher (Kelly) Vestal; his daughter, Johnna (Joe) Lamoureux; and his sister, Joyce (Joe) Dunfee. He also leaves behind numerous nephews, nieces and grand-nephews and nieces who absolutely adored him. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, John and Juanita Vestal; and his sister, Janet Redar.
A visitation will be held on March 28, 2026, from 1:00 pm until time of his service at 3:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307.
Donations may be made to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy at railstotrails.org. The family also asks that you honor Steve's memory by taking a long bike ride or a scenic drive, just as he loved to do.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ChapelLawnFunerals.com for the Vestal family.
