Maria was born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and came to the United States at the age of six. She proudly became a naturalized citizen and graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1971. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Maria dedicated her life to her family, her faith, and her work.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Raul Alfaro. Together, they raised their family in Highland, IN, and built a life rooted in love and dedication. Maria was a proud and devoted mother to her daughter, Angelica Segarra, and son, Raul Alfaro III; and a cherished mother-in-law to Elliott Segarra and Maria Alfaro. She deeply adored her grandchildren, Analise and Sarah Segarra, and Elijah and Eliana Alfaro, who were the light of her life. Maria is also survived by her brothers, Baltimore F. (Laura) Ortega and Jose Ortega; and her sisters, Maria Alicia Ortega and Yolanda (Martin Romero) Ortega; her nieces, Bertha Henderson and Olivia Romero-Ortega; and a great-niece and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Baldomero Tijerina Ortega and Alicia Mendoza Ortega; as well as her brothers, Jorge Ortega and Raymond Juan Ortega.
Maria enjoyed a long and accomplished career in retail. She worked at Carson Pirie Scott for 27 years, rising from sales associate to store manager through hard work, passion, and a commitment to excellence. She later continued her career at Nordstrom Rack for five more years, before retiring to focus on her family, who meant the world to her.
Maria will be remembered for her strength, grace, unwavering dedication, and the warmth she brought into every life she touched. Her legacy lives on in the love she gave so freely and the family she cherished. She will be deeply missed.
