Susan “Sue” Garner, was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Dale Garner; daughter, Amy Anderson; son, Steve (Kimberly) Garner; granddaughter, Kelly Garner; two grandsons, Eric and Chase Garner; sister, Candy Wragg; two brothers, Raymond (Debbie) Bakke, and Scott Swortz; brother-in-law, Dave Garner; sister-in-law, Martha Dembinski; along with many loving nieces, nephews, and in-laws. She was welcomed in to paradise by her parents, Dorothy (nee Phillips) Bakke and Albert Swortz; sister, Linda DeLuca; sister-in-law, Nancy Cooney; brother-in-law, Ed Wragg and beloved son-in-law, Darin Anderson. Sue passed away Monday, January 3rd, 2022 at age 73 at her home in Schererville, IN.
Sue was born March 31, 1948 to Albert Swortz and Dorothy (Philips) Bakke. She spent her younger years helping her mother and step-father Raymond “Ray” Bakke raise her extended family of siblings, which she considered to be her own brother and sister. She married her husband Dale Garner on February 4th, 1967 and they were happily married 31 days short of 55 years. Sue was a dedicated mother who went from a homemaker, caring for her two children, to a preschool teacher, where she dedicated most of her adult life shaping the minds of young children. Sue was always open to share her home and heart with any child who came into her life, thus giving her the title of “Mama Sue” and “Grandma Sue.”
Sue could always be found spending time in her garden or watching the birds from her window. She enjoyed vacationing to Florida (where she would spend most of the days adding to her always growing shell collection) and taking fishing trips to Waupaca, Wisconsin with her family. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandkids. She was always eager to hear about their day, their sporting events and what they had going on in their lives. She made sure to guide them in the right direction of life and instilled in them to be kind and caring. Sue will be missed by many, but will live on in the memories of those who loved and knew her, as well as the stories her family will tell for years to come.
A Public Visitation for Susan will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307. Following the Public Visitation will be a Funeral Service beginning at 7:00 PM. Pastor Doug Klukken will be officiating. Private cremation committal will take place at a later date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ChapelLawnFunerals.com for the Garner family.
In honor of Sue’s love for poems (and sometimes cheesy poems) at the end of cards, letters and packages, it’s only fitting to end this with a poem dedicated to her.
Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue,
Heaven has gained an angel,
But we all sure do miss you.
