“My dad loved to work in his garden. As far back as I can remember he was always pulling up weeds, digging up flower beds and planting the new seeds he’d picked up at Calloway’s. I would watch him work and sweat and stress over these tiny seeds all weekend long and wonder why he put so much effort into them in the first place. They were just seeds, after all. But he placed every single one with care and tended them tirelessly until they’d grown strong. Every time he’d see a flower bud and finally bloom, his face would light up like a kid at Christmas. He didn’t do it for money or for praise, but for the sheer joy of helping a tiny seed grow into something beautiful. Even though it was “just a seed” before, that flower represented the time, the effort, the love he had put into it for so long. And as I grew older, I began to realize that this was just how Dad was. Everyone knew “Corporate Andy”: the leader, the rallying cry, the go-getter. But we know he was so much more than that. Dad always led by example. He showed Ethan everyday how a gentleman conducts himself. He showed me how a lady should be treated. Dad would always say, “Never doubt yourself”; just one short phrase that ties together all the things he taught us. Be true to yourself. Trust your gut. Follow your heart. And Dad knew how to talk to people. He valued the thoughts and ideas of each and every person he spoke with. He had a way of building people up and making them feel good about themselves. He could talk to anyone about any subject. He would be anything for anyone, because as much as he loved his flowers, he loved his friends and family exponentially more. He nurtured us all while we grew into the beautiful community we are now. And I know he feels that same Christmas morning joy now looking at this garden he built.”
