Born in Ravenna, Ohio, Carla was the beloved daughter of Bonnie and Jack Brunk. From an early age, her warmth, determination, and adventurous spirit shone brightly. She eventually moved to Texas, where she married and began her most treasured role—as a mother to her daughter, Katrin.
Balancing her commitment to family with her professional aspirations, she built a meaningful career in Human Resources. Always striving for excellence, she earned her master’s degree from Baptist University while raising her family, embodying resilience and grace through every challenge.
Her passions extended far beyond her career. A lifelong learner and avid traveler, she had an uncanny ability to find joy in every corner of the world—whether in far-flung places or the smallest hidden gems. She delighted in exploring the world around her and generously shared that enthusiasm with all who knew her. Hosting gatherings for friends and family, crafting with children, sewing, and sharing tea—especially her beloved unsweetened iced tea—were some of the ways she connected with others. As her granddaughter once said, “Grandma, I know you…you’re fancy and you like unsweet tea.”
Adventurous at heart, she learned to ride a motorcycle at 50, went zip-lining, and fearlessly took on horseback riding and other antics to entertain her daughter. She adored tea parties, embraced creativity through sewing and crafting, and was a masterful cook, baker, and canner. Her love of books and insatiable curiosity made her a lifelong student of life.
She had an instinct for nurturing—treating every loved one’s child as if they were her own. Whether you asked for help or not, she’d find a way to support you (sometimes from the passenger seat with gentle, if insistent, navigation).
In 2011, she met the love of her life, Robert May. Their union marked the beginning of her most joyful chapter. Together, they built a blended family founded on love, laughter, and unwavering support—a legacy that continues through the strong bonds she helped cultivate.
She is survived by her loving mother Bonnie Brunk, her devoted husband Robert May, her cherished daughter Katrin, sons Alex and Walker May, her brothers Arley and Jeff Brunk, and her three adored grandchildren. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, boundless creativity, and the deep love she shared with everyone blessed to know her.
Several people have kindly asked how they can honor my mom at her upcoming memorial. In lieu of flowers, we’ve chosen two donation options that reflect causes close to her heart 💖
The first is the **Arizona Humane Society**. I’ve been deeply involved with the organization, and my mom always supported their mission wholeheartedly—helping however she could. A link to their general donation page is available on the funeral website and also posted below.
The second option is a contribution to the **Dallas Arboretum’s “Name a Day” program**. My mom was a proud member and spent many peaceful hours there, sharing her love of nature with others. We plan to select a special day in her honor, and all contributions will go directly to the Arboretum in support of this tribute. Since they are unable to accept individual contributions for this program, donations can be sent to her **Venmo account**, which we’ll use to track and submit the gift on behalf of everyone. The account handle and QR code are listed below, as well as the funeral website.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or trouble with the donation links—we’re happy to help.
Thank you all for your love, support, and for honoring her in ways that meant so much to her 💐
