Jack Douglas Jones, born June 25, 1958, in Dallas, Texas, passed away February 14, 2023 after a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Doug grew up in Garland and graduated from North Garland High School where he excelled in athletics. He competed in track at the state level and medaled in the 100-yard dash and 440-yard relay. Following high school, he was awarded a track scholarship from Grayson College. Doug graduated from the University of North Texas with a BA in Finance. At UNT, he became a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity where he established lifelong friendships.
Doug married Chris Jones in 1991 in east Texas, after being introduced by Doug’s sister, Julie. They made their home in Dallas with their children, Russell and Courtney, with Russ off to college that same year. In 2005, they moved to Plano where they created many happy memories and friendships. Doug’s professional career led him to follow in his father’s footsteps in the financial services industry where they worked together until his father was near retirement. After working in large investment firms for many years, he formed a partnership and transitioned to a Registered Principal as an independent investment advisor.
Doug’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, and golfing, which is no surprise. Each of the hobbies created the irresistible combination of being outdoors with friends and connecting with God. His parents had taught him that things go better with friends. His dad, Jerry, was quick to gather up a group of Doug’s friends to go fishing or camping, and JoAnn, his mom, loaded up the car with as many boys as it would hold for Dallas Cowboys games at Fair Park. For Doug, the outdoors was a sanctuary that especially touched his soul.
Doug had a passion for cooking and a knack for taking good recipes to the next level. He claimed that he learned to cook while a bachelor by watching Julia Child on PBS. The exhibit honoring Ms. Child was a “must see” for Doug when he traveled to Washington DC. He poured his heart into his cooking and loved to draw his family and friends into the kitchen, while he slowly worked his cooking magic. Doug firmly believed if the guests were hungry, the food would taste even better. He preferred a soundtrack of classic rock or soul on the side.
Doug was devoted to his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Chris; son, Russell Mullins; daughter, Courtney Maletic and her husband Paul; father, Jerry Jones and wife Gloria; sister, Julie Jones; niece, Katharine Ruschhaupt and husband Cameron; nephew, William Rosebrock and wife Sarah; great niece, Collins Ruschhaupt; brother-in-law, Tommy Tompkins and wife Deanna; nephews, Cliff Tompkins and wife Sarah, and Kelly Tompkins and wife Amber; great nephews Mason Tompkins, Wyatt Tompkins and Granger Tompkins; forever friend Craig Firestone and wife Laura Firestone, nieces Alex Firestone and Chrissy Firestone; and great nephew, Liam.
Doug is preceded in death by his mother, JoAnn Jones.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Custer Road United Methodist Church located at 6601 Custer Road in Plano.
