in Wichita, Kansas on September 13, 1923, the seventh child of Sylas W Cox and Jessie Woods Kimberling. She had been
preceded in death by her parents, siblings Daniel K Cox, Edith S Cameron, Silas W Cox, Ida Belle (Sue) Mitchell, Eugene S
Coxx, John W Cox and infant Vera Mae Cox, and husband Horace Carlton Russell. The family migrated to Kansas City,
Kansas where Jewell attended elementary school, converted to Catholicism and graduated from Sumner High School. She
forged lifelong relationships with three classmates, Alice Morris, Dorothy Harvey and Rudi Eagleson that continued to this
day. After graduation she attended Business College for a year before moving to Chicago, Illinois to live with her sister Sue.
In Chicago her brother Dan assisted her in finding a job at the U.S. Post Office where she worked from 1945-1954. There she
met her husband Horace and in subsequent years became a mother to David Carlton, Douglas Arnold, and Jessica Alice.
When she wasn’t entertaining her numerous family and friends as the hostess extraordinaire, Jewell was writing poetry for all
kinds of special occasions. As soon as her youngest was in 3rd grade, she went back to work as an In-take Secretary with
the Salvation Army - Family Service Division (S.A.). She retired from S.A. after over 15 years of faithful service to the Chicago
community. Jewell was a long-time member of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church where she helped organize the lector
ministry among other activities. She was also involved with Horace’s church, Good Shepherd Congregational Church,
designing Easter Tea tables and planning many women’s retreats. Jewell was known as a sharp dresser always
looking “Classy” and timeless even when she worked in her garden. Retirement life with Horace needed a little excitement so
they moved to Plano, Texas in 1993 where she enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center, bowling with the “Swinging Seniors”
league, being an AARP officer and spending time with three of her grandchildren. She was an active member of St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton Church in Plano, serving as a beloved lector for over 14 years. She had recently moved to the Cottonwood
Retirement Community and enjoyed making new friends and spending time with her family. Jewell is survived by sons David
(Paulette) and Douglas (Maggie), daughter Jessica Bannister (William), sister-in-laws Jimmie Russell, Lillian Russell Madgett,
Doris Dalton, and Josephine Perez, grandchildren Christopher (Karen) Russell, Susan (Greg) Muhammad, Natalie Russell,
Aaron (Jessica), Jonathan, and Elizabeth Bannister, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and
a host of friends from across the country from California to New York. May she rest in peace knowing that she will be in our
hearts and minds forever!
