Larry Callahan was born September 18, 1934 in Minot, North Dakota to Kathryn Minar Callahan and Delbert P. Callahan. The family soon moved to Berkley, California where Larry earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree at the University of California. He had a long career working in commercial real estate for Texaco, Safeway and retired from JC Penney in 1998 as Western Real Estate Manager after almost thirty years of service.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Diane Davies Callahan, the mother of his three children: Scott Callahan (Shannon) of Dallas, Texas, William Callahan (Alyce) of Little Rock, Arkansas and Jill Callahan Kennemur (Michael) of Plano, Texas, by whom he is survived. He is survived by his brother, Wade Callahan of Sacramento, California and his beloved grandchildren, Sam and Kate Kennemur of Plano, Texas and Julliette and Davies Callahan of Little Rock, Arkansas. Larry is also survived by his wife, Marilyn Bachnik Callahan. Larry and Marilyn had a wonderful and happy marriage for thirty-six years.
Larry was an amazing and friendly man who placed his Lord, family and friends above all else. He was a loving, caring husband and father. He found his greatest joy spending time with family. He loved going to dinner with his Penney Pals (as Marilyn called them). He found cruising to be very pleasurable and relaxing and wouldn’t travel any other way. If the country was not on the ocean, he did not want to go. He did manage to see most of the world. He loved golf and the comradery it afforded. He also loved wine and each year he would travel to the California wine country with his Penney Pals and other friends. Larry had a knack for winning friends and loved people in return.
Larry’s daughter, Jill, nominated him for Collin County Father of the Year and he was a finalist in 2003.
Larry died in peace on August 8, 2016, with his wife, children and grandchildren surrounding him with love.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in his memory to The Assistance League of Greater Collin County, 2011 W. Spring Creek Parkway, Suite 1500, Plano, Texas 75093.
