

She was born on October 22, 1917 in Waxahachie, Texas, a daughter of her father Hugh Vantreese and her mother Sonie Heath.
She grew up in Oak Cliff, Texas where she attended Adamson High school and graduated in 1936.
On September 17, 1939 she married the love of her life, Jim "Dink" Carter.
During her husband's service in the United State Army Air Force, she joined him in Harlingen, Texas and became a member of the Flight Surgeon Office.
After his military service came to an end they relocated to Port Arthur where they lived for 34 years.
In 1987 they relocated to Dallas, Texas to spend their golden years surrounded by their most important treasures, their children and grandchildren.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Texas and enjoyed working in her Sunday school class.
She dedicated her life to serving her friends, her family, and her God.
Nothing brought her greater joy than feeding those she cared for most and passed on her love of cooking to all that knew her.
Every Thanksgiving she could be found in the kitchen giving direction to every generation how the cornbread dressing family recipe should be put together.
She lived and taught everyone she came into contact with the value of unconditional love and what it means to be a good wife, mother, and Grandmother.
Her husband Jim "Dink" Carter of 70 years preceded her in death in 2010.
She leaves behind her daughter: Diana Sue Arrington of Carrollton, Texas and her son: James E. Carter Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, located at 8011 Frankford Road, Dallas, Texas 75252.
A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM.
A private family committal service will be held on Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, where Leona will be laid to rest with her husband.
