Lois Bennett Howard was born on June 29th, 1929 in Houston, Texas to Hattie and Elmer Bennett. An only child, she was a surprise blessing to her parents, ten years after they were told they would never be able to conceive children. Spending weekends on the family farm in East Texas, Lois developed a love for the outdoors and delighted in fishing with her father, helping him make cane poles from bamboo he planted that still grows strong today. Lois shared many valuable life lessons from her hard-working parents having lived through the great depression of the early 30’s.
After graduating high school, she attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where she majored in Library Science. Shortly after, she met her husband William J. Hammons Jr. at a picnic as the guest of her cousin Kathryn Dill and soon found herself living and working in Houston as an elementary school librarian and mother of three. The family would enjoy beach vacations to Galveston, float trips down the Comal River in New Braunfels and countless hours riding bikes or swimming.
Marrying Bruce Howard in 1979, Lois caught the travel bug and together they toured the nation in their RV. She was also able to visit her son when he was stationed in Germany.
Lois moved to DFW in 2001 and was predeceased by her husband Bruce and daughter Sherry Kuzma. She is survived by her son Scott Hammons and wife Ana, her daughter Nancy Rice and husband Leonard, granddaughters Jessica Hutton and Dayna Fries and husband Brian, grandson Gavyn Lyons, great-granddaughters Courtney Stuvick and Cheyenne Boker, great-grandson Madden Lyons, great-great grandson Warren Vest and great-great granddaughter Gwendolynn Vest.
