She was born in Newark, New Jersey on October 3rd, 1933. Marie grew up in a different era of Newark that was largely comprised of first- or second-generation immigrants from Italy. She would often reminisce about going to sleep with the sound of Catholic nuns singing in a nearby convent. At age ten, during a near drowning incident, she felt the hand of Jesus pull her out of the water. From that day until her death, she was on a mission from God to help others in need through prayer and a healing hand. As a result, she pursued and achieved a bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, becoming the only person in her large family to acquire a college degree. It was there where she met her future husband, Jerome Miles, whom she married in 1968.
She worked as an RN in various capacities for over forty years, reluctantly retiring at age 85. She once quipped, “Don’t tell anyone, but I love nursing so much, I’d do it for free!” This statement exemplified her dedication to others and serves as an example of her dry wit. In addition to nursing, she was passionate about her children, being a “Sweetie” to her grandchildren, Bible Study Fellowship, shopping, volunteering, Jazzercise, sewing, and baking her famous banana bread muffins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents Jessie and Benny Armento, and siblings Michael, Gloria, and Dottie. She is survived by her son, Marshall (Christa), daughter, Brenda (Dave), and seven grandchildren: Luke, Macy Marie, Hope, Kyle, Maverick, Anna Marie, and Jackson. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation for Marie will be held Monday, December 30, 2024 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 7990 President George Bush, Dallas, TX 75252. Following the visitation will be a funeral mass from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2700 Spring Creek Pkwy, Plano, TX 75023.
