Please join the Elins family and friends in mourning the passing of Martin (Marty) Robert Elins. Marty passed away early Saturday morning on 10/8 while in hospice at Medical City Plano. Marty is finally at peace after bravely battling cancer and renal failure complications for 22 months, he exceeded all medical expectations due to his sheer determination and will to live. Marty was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1949 to Muriel and Arnold (Arnie) Elins. As a youngster he lived an idyllic life in the heart of the city, while Arnie made a name for himself in the New York garment industry. With Arnie’s growing professional success the family moved to Wantagh, Long Island where the family grew to include the addition of his beloved little sister Joni (Elins) Spielberg.
While growing up Marty excelled in sports, he was an avid golfer, tennis player, baseball player and bowler. He continued that love for the rest of his life, pitching on the Temple Shalom Softball league (and making life-long friends), to being a long-time season ticket holder for the Dallas Mavericks. Eventually life brought Marty and his young son Philip (Phil) Elins to Plano to join his Uncle Jay Elins in the great opportunities in Texas in the early 80’s. Marty built a very successful Accounting/Auditing business, conducting audits on some of the largest corporations in the world. Making many of his client’s life-long friends along the way. Marty was a man with an infectious laugh and a huge heart. He loved his family, his friends, his Jewish culture/heritage, good food (especially Italian or Carnegie Deli), and travel. After he took his first cruise to Alaska, he was smitten and booked his next cruise while still on the ship. One of life’s highlights and happiest moments for Marty was to take his son and grandchildren on an Alaskan Cruise for his 70th birthday.
Marty is survived by his wife of 27 years, Pamela (Pam) Susan Elins, his son Philip Joseph Elins, his grandson Peyton James Elins and his granddaughter Mackenzie Lu Elins. His Brother-in-law Craig Spielberg, nephew Andrew Everett Spielberg, favorite cousins and traveling companions NJ and Bobby Sterneck. He is also survived by his aunt Sari Elins, his sisters-in-law Kathy Beck (Jeff) and Debbie Gonzales (John) and all his wonderful extended families on both sides in the US and Canada. Of his immediate family, Marty was preceded in death by his parents Muriel and Arnie Elins, his uncle Jay Elins, his cousins Mitch and Paula Elins, and his beloved little sister Joni (Elins) Spielberg. He’s also preceded in death by many relatives that contributed to his devotion to family and taught him to take every opportunity to cross the globe to celebrate weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Bat Mitzvahs, births and enjoy life’s happiest moments with your loved ones.
Marty loved his son Phil, no one could make him laugh like Phil. More than once, he would have to pull the car over as the laughter tears prevented him from driving. He was such a proud and loving Grandfather to Peyton and Mackenzie and although separated by a great distance, loved seeing them whenever possible. Marty was so loved by his family and friends and will be missed by so many. He was a one-of-a-kind maverick, so much fun he loved life with an infectious laugh and hilarious personality, Marty exuded joy and happiness and it was wonderful to have been by his side on his life’s journey. The family would also like to thank everyone that showed so much love and support during his illness, all the hospital visits, texts/calls and travel to see him was so kind and a blessing at such a heartbreaking time.
Marty will be irreplaceable in our hearts and memories. There will be a Celebration of Life for Marty Elins scheduled in the Spring that will be a joyful and a fitting commemoration of his wonderful life. Details TBD. In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Diabetes Association in Marty’s name.
