Mary Margaret Straub was born September 19, 1918, in Abilene, Kansas, and died on November 19, 2014 in Plano, Texas, at the age of 96. She was the daughter of the late Columbus Nathaniel and Mary Margaret Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Huston Straub, to whom she was married for fifty-two years.
Margaret grew up in Denver and attended the University of Denver, where she studied library science and met her late husband. Margaret and her husband moved to Port Arthur, Texas, in 1941, when Frank began his 44-year career at Texaco. She continued to live there until moving to Plano, Texas, in 2010 to be near family. After all seven of her children completed their degrees, she turned her attention to her community. She was well known for her intellect and wit in all of her circles. She was an active member of the Methodist Temple, where she served on the Pastor Parish-Relations Committee and for a number of years worked in the church library. She also volunteered for many years at The Museum of the Gulf Coast, where twice a week she could be found greeting visitors to the museum. She thrilled in meeting visitors from around the country and the world. She served for many years as an election judge and precinct chair; volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Department Club of Port Arthur. After moving to Plano, Margaret enjoyed living at Prestonwood Court where she was involved in a variety of activities and made many new friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her brother, Evan Howard Mitchell. She is survived by her seven children, Barbara Straub of Tucson, Arizona, Mary Gearheart (Bob) of Arcata, California, Jim Straub (Beverly) of Canyon Lake, Texas, Jean Straub of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Cathy Copeland of New Orleans, Louisiana, Susan Straub of Bend, Oregon, and Nancy Cline (Jim) of Carrollton, Texas; her ten grandchildren, Laura Albright (Chris) of Arcata, California, Greg Gearheart of Sacramento, California, Justin Redd (Margo) of Portland, Oregon, Brad Straub of Dallas, Texas, Rebecca Kainer (Clint) of Houston, Texas, Kirsten Copeland of Fort Worth, Texas, Bob Cline of Dayton, Ohio, Greg Cline of Carrollton, Texas, Allison Cline of Carrollton, Texas, and Mirella CaJacob of Bend, Oregon; her five great grandchildren Ben and Duncan Albright of Arcata, California, Ellison Gearheart of Sacramento, California, Tula Redd of Portland, Oregon, and Pierce Kainer of Houston, Texas; and her nephew Evan Howard Mitchell, Junior, of Denver, Colorado. She also leaves behind many other extended family members and friends.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Port Arthur, Texas, at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. The family wishes to thank the many kind and caring staff members of The Legacy at Willow Bend, Plano, Texas, and of the Visiting Nurse Association for their care in her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish to remember Margaret do so by making a donation to the charity of their choice.
