Sharon “Sherry” Nichols Carter of Princeton, Texas, passed away peacefully after a courageous four-year battle with lung cancer. Her resilience and strength were nothing short of remarkable, and those who knew her witnessed an unwavering spirit that touched many lives.
Born in Dallas, Texas, Sherry was the daughter of the late Wesley Nichols and Lois Nichols Grobaker. She graduated from Kimball High School in 1967 and embarked on a life full of adventure, love, and purpose. During her 17-year marriage to Ed Carter (Verna), Sherry traveled the world due to his military career, making homes in Greece, London, Mississippi, and Long Island before settling back in Texas in 1984.
Sherry built an impressive career in retail management, working for the Navy Exchange and Gingiss Formal Wear, where she was known for her professionalism, determination, and warmth. After retiring in 2008, she poured her heart into her greatest roles: devoted mother, loving Nana, and cherished friend.
She is survived by her two daughters, Tiffani (Jason) Jones of Frisco, Texas, and Stephani Carter of Princeton, Texas; her grandson and the joy of her life, Nicholas Carter of Princeton, lovingly nicknamed “Doodlebug”; her sister Beverly Berryman (Garland); and many extended family members and dear friends.
Sherry had a special gift for making those around her feel seen and heard. She was witty, humorous, nurturing, compassionate, and deeply devoted. She loved cooking homemade meals, singing lullabies, reading bedtime stories, and keeping close connections with those she cherished. Her daily phone calls with Tiffani and her unforgettable humor, so loved by Stephani, are among the many pieces of her soul that will be sorely missed.
Sherry’s legacy lives on in the strength and warmth she instilled in her family and in everyone lucky enough to be held by her love. As her daughters beautifully said, “She was the hands that held us all together.”
In honor of Sherry’s wish, a private graveside service will be held in Peoria, Texas, where she will be laid to rest beside her father. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America — a cause close to her heart.
