God has called our beloved Papa home, but he will always be with us. He lives in me, he lives in my children, and he lives in the lessons he taught our family. Papa was a simple, humble, strong, honorable, and wise man. I remember when he was younger, he would be outside all the time. He would be cutting down trees, weeding the lawn, planting vegetables, making raisins, and walking around the neighborhood. When we were in junior high, he worked in LA and as he took his walks, he collected all these aluminum cans he found along the side of the road. He would bring them home in his trunk and we would crush them with our feet.  Afterwards, he would take us to the recycling center and would divide the money between the four of us, so we had extra spending money. He taught us to work hard and always be grateful for what we had.

He raised me to be a very strong and independent woman. When I think about how I am most like him, I think that it’s how resourceful and practical I am.  One of my favorite sayings of his is “Konting Practica”, which means a little bit of resourcefulness and ingenuity.  That was what papa was like, always looking for ways to solve things and to keep things going. 

He set a strong foundation for our family in the way he lived his life and the lessons he taught. He was our rock. We will miss him being on here on this Earth with us, but we know that he is at peace and with God now.  We love you, Pa, and our hearts will always have “too much love” for you!  ---Your loving daughter, Iris

My name is Ariel Ortiz. I am married to Iris and we have two boys, Miles and Mason, 16 and 11.
There aren’t enough words to express what we are feeling right now.  Papa was a man of character. He made sacrifices leaving the Philippines to have a better future for his family. Now I’m thinking that was a great decision because I had the privilege of marrying one of his daughters. We have expanded the family with our 2 boys and now they get to carry on the legacy.  Papa was a the humble man. He did not say much, but deep down in there, he was proud of the family, with all the sisters and their accomplishments, as well as all the grandkids. Papa was very practical in life and he came to work. He has told me not to live beyond my means, to enjoy what I have. He loved the labor and would always labor around the house. He would be in our backyard cutting down our trees. Papa taught me to work around my house and taught me some tricks and I thank him for that. He was always there working. 

On the day that he passed away, that morning, I was at the house when I heard this noise in the backyard.  I went out and this old rusty ladder that we hadn’t used for years was pulled out. 
I knew it was Papa. I asked him, “Pa, are you trying to get work done?” 

God has greater plans for him and he is heading now to a better place. This is a celebration of his life and now he can truly enjoy that eternal life. Pa, we thank you for all your words of wisdom and life experiences:  I am going to miss, & your sons-in-law will miss, the morning coffee that we have at your dining room table, talking about life in general and listening to your words of wisdom. Thank you, Pa, and we love you.

My name is Victor Pinson & I'm married to the 3rd flower, Jasmine.  We have 2 handsome boys: our oldest is Vijay, a Junior in HS & Josiah, who just turned 10 years old.
I was talking with Ariel the other day about him going 1st because he's the Kuya but he quickly said yeah, but your Kuya’s Kuya. I guess I’m the eldest, so I go 1st.
I have many fond memories of my father-in-law (Papa). Like the time I asked him to marry Jasmine. He looked at me with his strong stare & sat in front of me with big broad shoulders. He asked me two questions “What brings you to Delano?” & “Why do I want to marry my daughter who's not physically well right now?”  I wasn't expecting those questions. I felt a bit intimidated. I told him how much I loved his daughter & how God will always take care of us. I remember mama putting her two hands on his shoulders & saying, “Papa, let’s eat.” Mathew 7:24-25 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”  This scripture reminds me of Papa because life is going to throw us curve balls & there will be traps. But when we put our Hope & trust in God, everything will be ok. I believe Papa lived that way. Papa had a lot of great qualities: He was wise, self-controlled, alert, never anxious, or stressed.  He always lived in the moment.
Papa, you leave a big void in our hearts & in our family as the leader. Your leadership to the family is immeasurable & it can never be replaced. Ariel & I have big shoes to fill but we promise you we will be committed & do our best to take care of Mama & your family. We love you Papa & we're going to miss you but will never forget how you lived. Thank you for leaving us such a great example on how to live our lives.

Ernesto or Kuyang Erning is our panganay or the firstborn of us five siblings. I'm next, Gloria, then Prescilla (Precy) third is Alicia (Alice) and last is Raymundo (Mundo).

Our father passed away when kuyang was still in first year high school while the rest of us was  in the elementary. At a very young age, he was a big help to our mother helping her sell dried fish, tinapa and other stuff from town to town.  After high school, he went to Manila for college. While studying at the Far Eastern University he was also working at a thread company. He took up Commerce. After college, he came back home and put up his own business to help our mother support us for college. We went to Baguio for studies. He was protective of us his sisters that he even followed us in Baguio and took a job at the City Enginneering Office.

Our Uncle Tony heard about this. He called Kuyang back home, helped him get a job at the Philippine National Bank in SanJose City where he met Ate Pin. They eventually got married and resided in Sto Tomas. 

When they migrated to the US, it was only Ate Pin who wrote to us. We never received a letter from him... but he calls, specially when our mother was still alive.

Kuyang was the kind of person whom you can approach and tell him your problem and be assured that he will  give you sound advice and help. He is loved much by his friends from home because he never fails to visit them when he comes for a vacation. He is like a political candidate, dropping by and chatting with everyone.

Kuyang, of us five siblings, with you gone there's Alice and me left nalang. My husband Leo is also gone. I'll be 80 on April and it will not be long until I meet you all.

To share a favorite memory with Tito Erning is not easy because there's a lot. However, his one-liners will hopefully resonate how my short stint in his life had a great impact on me and my family. "Natapon ang kape," Tito blurted on each and every drastic left turn I made. THAT WAS  TITO ON BEING MY FIRST DRIVER HERE IN THE USA. "Ano ang happy sa birthday?" Tito would remark on each and every birthday greeting he got. THAT WAS TITO AND HIS DRY SENSE OF HUMOR. "Konting praktika" Tito would reply on each and every minor (or even major) everyday mishaps. THAT WAS TITO AND HIS WISDOM ON BEING RESOURCEFUL. Seriously, Tito Erning was like a father I never had. He and Tita Pin, of course, embraced me and my family like their own. The most vivid memory up to this date of Tito was when he rang the home phone from his work to wake me up because he was gonna pick me up as I needed to go to work. This was the day after I arrived from Manila with Earl, my husband, and our two children. We stayed at their house before we got ourselves an apartment in Delano. Not only that, Tito Erning got us our first vehicle in the USA as he co-signed for my Plymouth van loan. I know, God already had planned all these...which I am forever grateful.

Tito Erning, those one-liners were already etched in our hearts as Earl, Migo, Annya, and I randomly say them with a smile.  Thank you for the love and the smile you gave us. We will never forget you. I will never forget you as you are safely tucked in my heart just like my own Tatay Remy and Nanay Andy. We love you, Tito Erning.....you are ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS. <3 <3  <3

When I was kid growing up in Delano, Auntie Pin and Uncle Ernie would visit the house on Bordelais street frequently, and I actually thought Uncle Ernie was an actual blood relative of my dad's.
Uncle Ernie had that stoic demeanor, sort of like my dad's, so I thought they were distant cousins from the Philippines and we all just hooked up in this tiny farm town of Delano.
Uncle Ernie felt like he was part of the family. He was there from the very beginning.
Uncle Ernie was a good man. He was a proud father of four lovely ladies.
I went to school with two of them, Daisy and Jasmine. My older brother Flo went to school with Iris and Rose.
Even as a kid I thought naming your daughters after flowers was a kind of cool.
Uncle Ernie was hard worker, and I remember seeing him in his postal office uniform many times. He was a traditional blue collar, family man.
I remember when I was in 5th grade, I had a track meet at Fremont Elementary and I saw Uncle Ernie there. He was cheering on Jasmine, who was in 6th grade, and watching her compete. If I remember, I believe Jasmine won her race that event, and I saw Uncle Ernie on the sidelines, calming cheering, proud, with a smile on his face.
That's the kind of guy he was. He was always supporting his girls at school events and ball games.
The first time I actually met him I was a bit intimidated, like all boys, we're always uneasy when we meet the parents, especially the father's of our classmates. Daisy, Uncle Ernie's youngest daughter, was a classmate of mine.
I would go over to the Taruc's house and play Ninetendo and study with Daisy- okay, actually, I can admit this now, Daisy would let me copy the math assignments and homework for our class. I hated math. But I loved hanging out at the Taruc's when I was a kid- they had all the cool video games. And Uncle Ernie was always polite and inviting. (Part 1 of 2).

Kuyang, my children and I love you and your family. We will always be your family here in Ifugao. Memories will be cherished and you will always be in our hearts.

Ate Pin, Flowers and family, with kuyang gone we pray for your strength and good health. He is now amongst the angels looking over us.

🎶Where do I begin…🎶 the opening line of our theme song “Love Story”. We just met in San Jose, went to a dance on Valentine’s Day, you invited me to a picnic, and many visits at our house in Sto. Tomas. We just fell in love, then got married on December 19, 1971 and blessed with four daughters Iris, Rose, Jasmine and Daisy. 
We had a good life in the Philippines:  I was a teacher and you were working at PNB, one of the best banks in the country. But we decided to immigrate to the US for better opportunities for our four beautiful daughters. And we accomplished that. They graduated from the best universities in CA and have lives of their own. And the price for that? We both got to work odd jobs, working in the grape fields, sorting carrots at a packing company, working two jobs sometimes away from the family.  Later on, you retiring as manager of a Chevron gas station and me, a clerk at the US Postal Service. But we didn’t complain because we could see all our daughters doing well in school and active in the community. 
Now they gave us six handsome, talented grandsons that we enjoyed from their birth to this time where they are growing up with some of their Lolo’s traits and have goals of their own! The eldest, Kali, college graduate now working, Kawayan, in his senior year in HS, Miles and Vijay, trying to go Universities too, and Mason and Josiah, doing great in school! They knew the hardships we endured immigrating here in the US and the value of hard work. 
As I looked at the hundreds of pictures in the slide show, I know you had done your part as a husband, a father, and grandfather. Your legacy will live in our hearts. Job well done! You also gave us “Too Much Love”, as you told me those last words. You will forever live in our hearts.  No more suffering. Thank you for Everything!  Rest In Peace, Dear Papa/Lolo. 😇❤️🙏

Your memory will be forever in our hearts Tito Erning. There will be no exact words how greatful we are for your never ending support and guidance when you are still with us. I am Jasmine Pinson, the 3rd flower in my parents’ garden.  It is a blessing to celebrate our papa‘s beautiful life and to honor the special memories we had together.  Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.“ This is the scripture that came to mind when I was meditating and thinking of our papa.  Everything he did, he did it with all his heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.  When we immigrated here from the Philippines in 1983, I was 5 years old. I remember him sacrificing his time, taking on two jobs at a time, a day shift and night shift.  Papa was an incredible person. He loved making people laugh, and he loved helping people become successful, as is written in his obituary. He would take time to teach people how to drive, to change the oil, and was always generous to those in need, especially friends and family in the Philippines & Delano.  Whenever anyone came at our door, he would always ask them to join us to come eat at our table.  Some of my favorite childhood memories with Papa was riding our bikes through the almond fields and picking almonds, picking up aluminum cans around the neighborhood for recycling, so we could earn some money.  I loved that we had grown up with a vegetable garden in our backyard, watching stalks of corn, tomatoes, and other vegetables grow. He taught us how to pull weeds from the garden, to dry grapes and make them into raisins, & take care of our home. I also appreciated the bunk bed he built for me & Daisy, which we used to pretend was our apartment building.  Papa, salamat for the example you have set as a loyal husband, caring father, fun Lolo, & all you have sacrificed to provide for the life we now have. You are our hero.  Mahal na Mahal Kita, Jasmine

I am #4, the fourth child born and they stopped after me.  They said no more, that’s it, no more trying for a boy or another child and I am truly blessed to be born into this family.  My Papa/Dad was my hero and role model.  He was a man of few words but I can still hear his voice/grunts when I am thinking about what he might say in certain situations. I am the most like him in that I don’t talk too much. Even though he didn’t say much, I know how much he loved and supported us just by his presence and actions.  There are a lot of other traits we, as his family, inherited from my dad.

I did have a lot of father/daughter bonding time throughout the years. Some are:  1) In the late 80s and early 90s we would watch regular antenna TV, since we didn’t subscribe to cable channels, so Star Trek Next Generation would be on and I would watch these shows with him and that is how I became a Trekkie or Sci-fi fan.  2) I am into cars and know how to use tools because my Papa taught me how to perform an oil change and change out a flat tire at an early age.  I’m known as the “Cool Car Tita” but my love for cars and driving started when I was a little kid at the mall parking lot sitting on my dads’ lap in the driver’s seat.  

When I think of my dad, there are a couple of words that pop in my head, grateful and blessed, which is what I feel.  I am blessed to be their child and grateful to be raised by my hero. Thank you Papa and I love you Papa.

We have known Erning for a long time as well as the family.  He was my husband's buddy in most of the very long Fil-Am events.  Erning would sit with Pete and talk to each other to pass the time while waiting for the long programs to end. I remember that he is a happy person.  He is also a good husband to my friend Pin, a good father and great grandfather to all his grandsons.

Our dearly loved “ Ernesto Taruc” Your memories will not be forgotten . 

Thank you, Uncle Erning, for letting us stay in your house for a month until my 2 kids and I found another place to stay. It was January 17, 1986, Uncle Erning was the first person who helped us when my first husband passed away. Pin asked him to drop something in the house, not knowing what’s going on. Thank you so much, Uncle Erning, for all your help and kindness. We will never forget you. May you rest in peace…

My wife and I have known the Taruc family for at least 37 years. Every time Uncle Ernie and I would get together he would talk about education and life itself. He would always ask how our son is doing and his face would light up because he was still in school. When I got sick, Iris would pick up my wife so she could clean up and be able to be there with me. So I want you to know we will always be there for you as time goes on. Moe and Tessie Mascarinas

  saying goodbye after Thanksgiving this year, 
the tips of my 47 year old fingers 
  easing his furrowed brow 
  at the hospital 
  after they unplugged the ventilator 
  his face still warm and brown 
  surrounded by his girls.  

does my spirit find his trace? 
hell yes! 
my ferocity shaped and sharpened by him:
training a 6 year old girl in the Philippines
  to ride jeep and bus by herself 
  with total strangers, 
throwing us into his childhood river in Talavera
  to sink or swim, 
pulling Ate & I from bickering in our room
  to fight in front of him 
inviting argument and reason, 
  if we didn't see eye to eye with him.
  oh how the house rumbled 
  at our thundering fights 
  during my rebellious Delano high school years. 
but even then he found quiet in the night 
to sit at my bedside, 
to soothe my sleeping forehead, 
to find a way to let me know, 
he still loved me.  

this tiny tenderness 
amid river of tough love.   
that's our flow: Papa and I. 
I cannot hold this evidence like rocks 
but I stand upright, a bold human,
a bold woman: 
  as student body president of 3 schools in Delano; 
  brought him his first 2 grandsons Sidhartha & Kawayan;  
  led some of the biggest environmental coalitions in California, 
    for the right of communities to live 
    & not to be poisoned by oil companies.  

because he nurtured me, 
taught me, 
shaped me, 
and through me, 
through my actions,
his love lives.

In the early and late part of the 70's, i had lots of activities with Tito Erning, in those times, we are frequently visited by strong typhoons and many trees in our "bakuran" had been wiped out by the storm and together we are the ones who cut the fallen trees and clean our place, by using the "sorocho", a saw blade that can be only used by two people, together we cut down those fallen trees to make firewoods, we also played chess on weekends, he had been my mentor for my father was seldom coming home because he was a U.S. serviceman, he told me to be a good person and  always adviced me to be "practical" in every day life, he had been more like a father to me but not obliging me to follow or obey his rules/experiences in life, he had helped me or should i say borrowed money from him to purchase a land from where we are living now together with my family, he was more than a father to us.
Together with Yolly and Andre, we are praying to the good Lord above that may eternal light shine upon your soul, rest in peace idol!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Hello, everyone! My name is Mason Ortiz, the son of Iris and Ariel, and the 5th apo. If you didn’t know already, I was Lolo’s sidekick, which basically meant that I would make him coffee, find him a movie to watch, and many other things that I did for him. These moments that I had with Lolo are really some of the most memorable ones of him. However, those are not my most favorite. My favorite memories of Lolo were going to Delano and him always playing around with us. Lolo would always pull our ears and tell us different stories of his life. This is one of the reasons why I loved Lolo. He was always so fun to be around and I looked forward to seeing him. Another reason why I loved Lolo was his grumpiness. Even though it could be a little frustrating at times, that was what made Lolo Lolo to me. I truly loved every moment that I had with Lolo from the bottom of my heart, and even though he is gone, he will forever be in our hearts. Thank you.

Ernesto was the rock of your family and was always present with his generous wisdom and helping hand. Hello everyone, my name is Vijay Taruc Pinson, and I am the son of Victor and Jasmine, and the 4th apo.

Who was Ernesto Taruc? I’m sure you all knew  him as foremost, a father, a businessman, but most importantly to me, my Lolo. I have countless memories of Lolo Erning, like visits to Delano, him coming to our birthday parties and eating food, and watching movies together at home or at the theatre.  I feel like, after each of these get togethers, you could always walk away knowing this, Lolo loved his family so so much and
as calm and collected as Lolo was, you could sense his strong and undying love for all of us, simply in the way that he carried himself and in the tone in which he spoke.  Lolo’s immense love for his family, and the people around him, is an inspiring attribute of his that I aspire to apply to my own life, with my own family, and the individuals I will continue to meet as my life progresses.  One scripture that I feel is important to remember during this time of mourning and appreciation of Lolo Erning is Ecclesiastes 5:12 "The sleep of a laboring man is sweet." Lolo was a laboring man, he was a blessing to this world and to my life, and with that, his rest will be sweet and his legacy will carry on.

Hello, My name is Kawayan, my mom is Rose, and I am the 2nd apo.  Lolo Erning left me a lot of fun memories. He would always make everyone laugh with his grumpiness and funny remarks. Lolo was very smart. I remember his great skill in chess and it was always so crazy to play against him because he was thinking many steps ahead. I don’t remember anybody beating him. When Lolo and Lola would come to our hosue when I was younger, I always remember how much he loved action movies. We would aways run down to the video rental store to get DVD’s before Netflix  was popular. I’ve heard a lot of stories about his life and I was always so impressed and grateful for all he has done for the family.  The sacrifices he had to make to come here and raise his family. Similar to what my kuya was talking about, quite a few years ago, we wrote things about how we are similar to Lolo. Now I don’t remember writing this, but recently, we read the book and I wrote "I am like Lolo because I love my family." Yes, he loved his family very much and we all love him too. Lolo, you will always live on in our hearts. Thank you.

My Lolo had a domain all to himself.  Some of my earliest memories with him took place at a Chevron gas station.  At the time, I was maybe the height of a kitchen sink and had an innocent understanding of the world, so seeing him behind the counter was something that I was amazed at.  To me, the man behind the counter had access to, and control over, anything a person might need.  This Chevron was his kingdom.

I also remember a few years ago, our family had an activity where we said how each of us was similar to Lolo.  I said something along the lines of “we both know how to sleep a lot”.  I don’t think this was said with the most thought behind it,  and I don’t think it acknowledged the decades of hard work he put in for his family.  The opportunity he created with my Lola for their 4 daughters has also been passed down to me and the other 5 grandsons.  I cannot be thankful enough for this.  Lolo earned his rest.  Rest in peace.

I am Josiah, the son of Victor & Jasmine. I am the 6th apo.  One thing I loved about Lolo was that he was fun to be around. Lolo loved to give hugs to me, and he was gentle and caring.  Thank you for all the great memories, Lolo. I love you.

I’m Miles, the third apo.  Lolo was a very special man, and you know, looking back at when I was little, I never truly realized how caring, strong, and wise Lolo was. I always thought that he was just a guy who slept, ate, and watched Netflix all day. However, I remember how he’d pick me up in elementary school and whenever he’d have to get gas, he would always buy me candy that I wanted, specifically, red vines, and if he didn’t get gas, I’d always ask if he had to so that I could get candy…and he would go to the gas station to get me candy even if he didn’t have to get gas. I remember how he would take shots before he ate food and I would always ask him, “Does it hurt?” and he would say “Eh, just a little.”  I also remember how he would pull all her ears and mess around with all of us. I’ll never forget those little moments and I love you, Lolo,  forever.

Papa, you are now with the Lord & I am so thankful for all you have done to serve us, your family, all these years. I am so proud to have been one of your daughters. I know you are especially proud of all your 6 apos & how they continue to carry on your legacy of hard work, of playing & having fun, sharing laughter, & being men of honor & integrity.

Whatever you did, you did it with all your heart. We have faith that you are now receiving your reward in heaven. We love & appreciate you & miss you so much already.

   When Randy and I moved to Delano in 1994 and purchased our house on 5th Place we were blessed with the best next door neighbors, Ernie and Pin Taruc and their daughters.  Through the years we formed a special bond and friendship.  We were always included and looked forward to all their gatherings and celebrations.  After Randy was placed on permanent disability, and Ernie retired they spent alot of time talking in our garage listening to the oldies Randy liked to play.  Randy especially liked to hear Ernie's stories from the Philippines.  They are now continuing their talks in heaven.  
     Ernie it was a pleasure knowing you.  Jacque and I will check in and watch over your beloved Pin.  
     Our deepest condolences to Pin, Iris, Rose, Jasmine, Daisy and their families.  May the love you hold in your hearts and your faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ comfort and ease the pain of your great loss.  He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

It has been years since Kuyang Erning and Pin, together with their daughter Daisy, sisters Alicia and Angelita, and niece Wilma came to Thailand on a three-day visit.  As their stay was short,  they had a packed schedule and sometimes Kuyang Erning was tired but I never heard a word of complaint from him. He was game even when it came to unfamiliar food. Rest in peace,  Kuyang Erning.  My deepest condolences  to  your bereaved family but I know you will remain alive in their hearts  as well as in the memory of us who knew you. 

 Tito Erning taught me how to drive and do a car oil change.    His wise life lessons I will always remember, like, ‘‘There are always “sale”. They will never end!’  I will always cherish memories of him bantering with Lola Beth and Vic.  He taught us and corrected us  through his jokes.  Most importantly, Tito Erning ( and Tita Pin) made it possible for me to continue to grow in my faith.  Sunday Mass is a must. Their marriage is an inspiration.  Charity in action personified.   May God welcome him in His kingdom.  Pray for us, Tito Erning.
