

DeQuincy--
Surrounded by his family, James Puerta, died on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, in Lake Charles, La. after a valiant struggle with leukemia.
James was born February 1, 1942, in DeQuincy to John and Venie Puerta and lived there all his life. A graduate of DeQuincy High School, James attended McNeese State College before serving 2 years in the U.S. Army. After his military service, James worked at Cleco, Lawco Water Co, Billy's Feed Store and Marcantel's Feed Store.
He took great pride in raising registered Red Brangus cattle. He was an active member of the Bed Brangus Association and served as secretary as well as President of the association. James was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in DeQuincy having been a member for 56 years participating in the choir and the Praise Band and was a deacon the past 32 years.
James is survived by his sisters, Catherine DeLee of Alexandria, Virginia Dunham Anderson of Sulphur and Grace Perez of Lake Charles and brother, John A. Puerta of DeQuincy and numerous nieces and nephews remaining to cherish his memory. Preceding him is death were his parents, John and Venie Puerta, a sister, Mollie Odreman and an aunt, Josephine Banken, who was a second mother to him.
Funeral services will at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 14, 2010 in Pine Grove Baptist Church of DeQuincy under direction of Hixson - Snider Funeral Home. Rev. Chris Jeffus will officiate. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. and from 9 am Saturday in the church.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to Pine Grove Baptist Church, 4811 Wes Berry Road, DeQuincy, La. 70633
The Puerta family would also like to thank Dr. Leroy Fredricks, Dr. Pete Karam and the kind compassionate group of Southern Care Hospice for their care during his illness.
To those who loved him, James would say: "Live every day as though it were your last. Don't miss an opportunity to tell someone you love them. Take time to enjoy the small things in life. Teach your children to put others first. Know the joy of a loving family. Continue to build homes with strong moral and ethical values. Most of all, live each day for Christ.”
