

Charles (“Chuck”) Arthur Fisher, born September 17, 1922 in Lima, Ohio to Charles Walter and Iva Edith (Bowers) Fisher, passed away September 30, 2014. Mr. Fisher was in the U.S. Marine Corps from October 7, 1942 to November 20, 1945. He proudly served in the Pacific theatre during World War II. In 1941 he met Nelleta Perry and married her on December 8, 1945 in Lima, Ohio after returning from service. The outdoorsman and the city girl celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to her death. He received his degree in civil engineering from Ohio Northern University, being the first person in his family to attend college. Charles worked with various private engineering firms in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Cincinnati, Ohio before recruitment by the State of Michigan as a bridge design engineer, retiring January 26, 1985 after 24 years. He was a 53 year resident of DeWitt, Michigan, active in civic and social endeavors. He had a lifelong love of family, nature, literature and was an avid fisherman. As a young man he hiked the entire length of the state of Ohio and swam the Ohio River for fun. He enjoyed annual wilderness fishing trips to Canada with his son and summers with the family at the cottage on Lake Leelanau. An avid sports fan, he rarely missed watching Detroit Tigers games. Beloved husband, father, grandfather (“Papa”), neighbor and friend, Chuck enjoyed many annual cruises and trips with his family to Alaska, Hawaii, the Pacific coast, Panama Canal, Caribbean, Canada and Europe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Landa; brothers, Ira Donald and Richard Fisher; and sister, Cleora Howard. Surviving to cherish his memory are sister, Imogene Swick of Lima, OH; daughter, Dr. Linda Fisher (Brian) Williams of Williamston, MI; daughter Layne (Russell) Flick of Cincinnati, OH; son, Brant Fisher (Delores Hammonds) of Bath, MI; grandchildren, Donald, Dorinda and Dale Williams; close nephew, Thornton Perry of Bellevue WA; numerous nephews and nieces in Ohio; and de facto family members Lawrence and Susie Gilroy of DeWitt, MI. The family wishes to thank Ruby and Dillon of Hospice Advantage for their exceptional care. The funeral service will take place at 12:00 noon on Monday, October 6, at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 E. Washington in DeWitt.
