Eugenia “Genie” Ann Stone, age 82, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025, in Dewitt, Michigan. Born on December 30, 1942, in Paw Paw, Michigan, she lived a life filled with purpose, passion, and deep devotion to her family and community.
A proud graduate of Albion High School and Central Michigan University (CMU), Genie dedicated her life to education. She began her teaching career at Grand River Street School in Lansing and later continued as a substitute teacher in the Dewitt school system. Her love for teaching extended far beyond the classroom—she was known for her boundless enthusiasm and commitment to nurturing young minds.
Her passion for teaching also found expression outside of traditional schools. She taught swimming at the YMCA and gave lessons to her grandchildren and neighborhood children alike. She shared her talents through 4-H by teaching knitting, passing along skills that blended creativity with tradition. For 27 years, she served as a spotter for the Dewitt football team and earned the affectionate title “Mrs. Voice of the Panther Football,” a role she cherished deeply.
Genie had a vibrant spirit that shone through in every aspect of her life. She was rarely seen wearing shoes—her barefoot nature reflected her free-spirited love for oceans, seashells, dolphins, pools, and all things beach-related. She could be found tending to her garden, reading a bounty of books, doing puzzles, or knitting Afghans or Christmas stockings for family members.
She adored angels and surrounded herself with their imagery—a reflection of the kindness she extended to others throughout her life. Her grandchildren were especially dear to her heart; she delighted in spoiling them.
Genie is survived by her beloved husband of almost 60 years, John P. Stone; sons Tom (Betty) Stone, Robert (Ann) Stone, and TJ (Anne) Stone; brother Bruce (Donita) Higgins; and grandchildren Michael (Kylie), Adam, Kenny, and Maddy Stone. She was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Esther (Higgins) Stone.
Honoring Eugenias wishes, a private service will be held at a later date to honor her life.
