

Bettie V. Smith (Sweeney) was born in Haughton, Louisiana on 12/28/1938 to Mr. Joe Sweeney and Blumia K. Sweeney. Bettie resided in Compton, California until her death. Bettie graduated from Princeton High School in 1957 in Princeton, Louisiana and later relocated to Los Angeles, California where she met and married King G. Smith. From this union there were born three children: Priscilla A. Smith, Darrell E. Smith, and Shawn P. Smith.
Bettie was employed by Voit Rubber Company, held several jobs, and later pursued a career in Nursing from where she received her Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) certification. One of her positions was a Private Duty Nurse for her cousin, Percy Williams, until his death. Bettie was always compassionate and giving of herself and this profession suited her perfectly. Bettie loved to travel, work in her garden, spend time with family and friends, sing, have fun, and laugh! Her smile and laughter would always light up a room. Bettie united with Grant A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles and was a devout member for many years until she was unable to attend due to illness.
Bettie was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, King G. Smith. She is survived by their three children - Priscilla, Darrell, and Shawn, son-in-law Michael, siblings - Leon Sweeney (wife - Lee Velma), (who preceded Bettie in death), Helen Sweeney Holloway, Carrie Sweeney Taylor, Henry Sweeney (wife - Erica), Larry Sweeney, Michael Sweeney, Kenneth Sweeney (wife - Erin). She also is survived by a host of beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
