Throughout her life Penny was dedicate to God and to her family. Penny loved music, playing the piano and singing from an early age. In high school Penny was part of a singing group called “The New Crusaders” which performed to raise money to build Laurel Pines Campground. As an adult Penny sang in the church choir and also played in the bell choir at Christmas.
Penny’s post high school education started at California College of Commerce in Long Beach with Secretarial skills being mastered like Gregg short hand at 120 words per minute. She later continued her Electronic Office and Word Processing training at the ABC Adult School in Norwalk where her fellow classmates labeled her as the “Typing Queen” because of her blazing 90 word per minute typing speed.
Penny’s first real job was six years as the secretary for the Community Presbyterian Church in South Gate. After kids, Penny went back into the workforce working at Delaney Sash and Door in Los Alamitos for a few years. When Delaney went out of business, Penny found employment that lasted for 12 years with Aramark Uniform Services.
Penny dabbled in many different interests over the years, such as sewing, macramé, gardening, quilting, painting, stained glass, cake decorating, and baking.
Penny faithfully served as the secretary of the Triumph Register of Southern California for 14 years. This is a car club that both Bob and Penny have been very involved in.
Penny achieved a level of excellence in everything she did, through hard work and tireless dedication. Penny never made excuses for why something couldn’t be done; instead she found a way to do it well.
After Penny was diagnosed with cancer, the love she showed to everyone she came into contact with was evidenced by the love returned in the form of countless cards, meals, visits and phone calls. Even as Penny’s health declined she continued, without complaining, to love those around her.
One of the most important things in Penny’s life was her family. Penny was a loving daughter and sister, a joy to her parents and siblings growing up. Penny fell in love with Bob Jasper when she was 16 years old and on July 14th Bob and Penny celebrated 36 years of marriage. Penny and Bob raised two wonderful sons, Roger and Eric, who have followed their parent’s example of dedication to the Lord. Penny was delighted with her three beautiful grandchildren Kelsie 6, Ashley 2 and Ian 1. She will be so missed as a part of their lives.
On February 26, 2004 Penny was diagnosed with cancer in the form of a brain tumor. She had surgery on February 29, 2004 which removed most of the tumor. The surgery was followed by radiation and chemo which controlled the growth until her body could no longer withstand the treatments. After a very brave struggle, God brought her home to sing in his choir and now she can enjoy his presence for eternity. Penny is survived by many relatives: her husband, Bob Jasper; her mother, Barbara Self; her siblings Karen McCollester, Robert Lee Self, and Peggy Harris; her sons Roger and Eric and her grandchildren Kelsie, Ashley and Ian.
“It’s hard to say just a few words about someone who has blessed my life for 58 years. Penny was such a joy, a sweet child, a gracious teenager, a loving wife, a devoted mother and grandmother. She raised two caring sons who live lives of integrity. They have loving wives and have brought me three great grandchildren. God is so good and has been faithful always. He is my strength.” Barbara Self, Penny’s mother
“Penny has blessed and inspired many with her strong faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and her sweet gentle spirit. She has been a loving wife, an awesome mother and the best sister anyone could ever ask for. Penny and I shared the celebration times as well as the disappointing and sad times. Penny’s talents and kindness impacted others as she sent cards, baked and cooked for those in need, and generously gave of her time.
Penny worked diligently and efficiently at all tasks whether at home or in the work place.
Penny was a lover of music and sang in the church choir. She offered her special alto voice when she and I would sing duets for occasions such as anniversaries. I believe she is singing right now in Jesus’ heavenly chorus. Praise God for her life.” Karen McCollester, Penny’s sister
“Penny’s life has blessed everyone who knew her. I had the privilege of holding her in my arms when Lee and Barb brought her home from the hospital after she was born. When she was a young girl at age 12 she would clean for me one day a week and earn $2.50. Out of that little bit of money she tithed plus gave $.25 to her Sunday school fund to sponsor a child in Korea. She knew Christ at an early age. I felt like she was my daughter also. She was a joy.” Alberta Rich “Aunt Bertie”, Family Friend
