If anyone ever cared, really cared for someone else, it would have to be Bernice Foulds. She was a warm hearted and well liked individual, and these wonderful traits came easily to her because she was such a sociable and amiable person, someone who was always making certain that those around her had whatever they needed.
Bernice was the daughter of Thora and Thomas Bishop, growing up in Welland and St. Catherines, Ontario. She grew up with two younger brothers, Thomas and Brian. She met her best friend who currently lives in St Catherines, in grade school. In high school, Bernice played basketball and volleyball. In her college years, Bernice continued to stay active by playing basketball and ski weekends. She earned her nursing degree from Western University and the MAC training school for nurses. Her most prestigious award was Valedictorian of her nursing class. She was an active member of the VON.
Bernice was a “people person”, she could pretty much talk to anybody about anything. While growing up, she met her best friend, Corine Darby. Later in life, she became friends with Heather Tarrison, Helen Hebert, Anita Switzer, Bev Carly and Linda Campbell and many more. Bernice met her husband to be, Richard at a cocktail party and married him in 1965.
Her first occupation upon graduating was as a nurse and then after marrying Richard, Bernie stayed home with the boys until they were teenagers, then worked with Richard at Foulds Furniture where her interior design flair flourished.
Her favorite pursuits were horseback riding, loving the farm goats, painting, gardening, family and socializing with lunches, cocktail parties and travelling the world.
She was appreciated and respected, willing to help at any time. Politically, Bernice was supporter of the Conservative Party. Religion and faith were important to her. She was a member of the Westdale Reformed Church.
She was also blessed with 6 grandchildren, Thomas, Abbey, Brayden and Nathan with Drew, Mac and Sam with Kent. Many memorable pets include Sam and Sadie, Ralph and Martha, all the horses, especially Chief, the farm goats and cats. Lastly, her favourite pet was the British bulldog, Louie!
Always meeting new friends, she loved sharing stories and talking about news, family and her pets. In retirement, she found new pleasure in painting, gardening, and attending the theatre. She was active in the community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities that retirement offered her.
Bernice died from natural causes with Alzheimer's. She is survived by her two boys Drew and Kent, their wives Ann Marie and Brigitte, six grandchildren and many friends. Services are being held at Marlatt Funeral Chapel, Dundas, ON. Bernice will be laid to rest in the Paris Cemetery beside her husband Richard.
She was without question the type of person who enjoyed experiencing things firsthand. She was practical and sensible, but what friends and family will remember her for most is the fact that she was so understanding and kind, with a wit to make you smile. As someone close to her said, she was a strong female role model in their life.
