Educator and surgeon, died February 13, 2014 after a brief illness. He is survived by his children, John (Celeste), Ann (David), Richard and William, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was the founding Chairman of the Department of Surgery at McMaster Medical Centre, and was always devoted to the cause of medical education. Before coming to Hamilton he attended Blackburn College, graduated from the University of Illinois and received his medical education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a decorated veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific. He was in the first class of Markle Scholars, a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Chairman of Surgery at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York. His family and many friends will miss the stories, the latest interests, and the convivial evenings over wine or a campfire. A celebration of Barb’s life will be held at McMaster University in the near future. Memorial donations may be sent to the Health Sciences Library at McMaster University.
