I believe my Mom, Mary Smith, dated Derek for a couple of years. I’m not positive if this is the ‘right Derek’, but I think it possibly is. If so, I will say, I was a very young girl then and remember him to be very kind. He asked my mother to marry him after a long while courting and she declined, but they stayed friends. I am sorry to read now, of your loss. Our mother passed 2 years ago. Perhaps they will be friends in heaven. 

I met Derek in 1964 in Winnipeg at Federated Insurance, having recently arrived from the UK. Derek befriended me and we spent many happy times together both in Winnipeg,UK, and briefly in Toronto. He was a gracious gentleman and loyal friends and I last spoke to him several years ago. I tried his # today to give him a call for his upcoming Birthday (April 19th) and after looking for a new # saw the obituary. I will miss you old friend.

I was fortunate enough to have worked with Derek 1985 - 1989 at the Gerling Konzern in Canada, where he was instrumental in setting up and leading a  department between 1969 and 1989. His humor, independant spirit and perseverance , which was formed during the Blitz as a child in London, instructed me during my years since then. Of course he taught my infant son at the ROM a few things about fossils ! I love you and miss you, Derek.

News travels slowly to England, just heard of Uncle Derek's passing, so sorry, had hoped to visit you in Toronto but never made it.

Dear friends,
I made a typo in my notes about Derek, saying it was a 'job' to see him at the Museum.  I think everyone who knew him realized that i meant 'joy'.  I will miss him very much.

I have very fond memories of Derek.  He was such a pleasure to work with at the ROM.  He was a true patron of the arts and attended all my dance performances I invited him too.  He was so encouraging and I loved our conversations.  I will really miss him.

Derek was one of the most charming and gracious men i have met.  It was always a job to see him here at the Museum.

Derek was a loving, kind man, and one that I feel truly blessed to have had in my life.  He will be missed.  My sympathies to his family.

Derek was a wonderful friend whom I will miss dearly. I met him at the ROM's Discovery Gallery thirteen years ago where his smile, kindness and ease with children made him loved by all the staff. When one of my paid employees didn't show up for a shift, he would gladly volunteer to work in their stead. Derek also sat for a portrait that hangs above my mantle -- he regaled me with stories of his youth while I painted it over 10 weeks in 2002. It will always remind me of of our friendship and his wonderful spirit.

Derek volunteered at the Royal Ontario Museum for about 20 years. He frequently assisted me (past Programs Manager) ensuring that the Museum's adult courses and various special lectures and events all ran smoothly. I strongly depended on his invaluable support. Derek's organizational and social skills significantly contributed to the success of so many of the ROM's programs. His teamwork, his sense of humour, and his welcoming smile are all greatly missed.

I will remember Derek fondly. Each fall and spring, Derek would stop at my desk at the ROM -- where he volunteered for many years -- and ask me to reset his watch when daylight savings time kicked in. He and I would joke that he should stop buying digital watches. Derek was always a source of light, laughter, and wisdom -- I will miss seeing him and hearing his stories. My condolences to his family.

Sorry to hear the news. Derek was the head of the family at Gerling and our team was very successful because he was not afraid of new ideas.

Derek wasn't with us long at the villa, but was a pleasure to be around and work with. Really going to miss his accent and stories. My thoughts and prayers are with his daughter who I only met a couple times (wonderful girl) such a heart breaking loss, but a gentleman I will never forget. God Bless

I want you to know that I will truly miss Derek.  I worked with him at the ROM on Friday evenings; we always had a great time welcoming visitors. There was a real void when he left the ROM.  Blessings to all his family & friends.

So sorry to hear of Derek's passing....our wonderful friend for over 50 years....and "Uncle Derek" to our  children, Lori, Kevin, Ken and Andrea....have lots of memories of Winnipeg, Toronto, and him visiting our cottage at Big Gull Lake..... saw him last Christmas and took him for breakfast....was hoping to see him again...not to be....fondly remembered by Andy and Cathy Spohn
