

December 21, 2010 at the age of 86, Edmund Zabel died peacefully at Hamilton General Hospital. Beloved husband of 62 years to Liesa. He is sadly missed by his four loving children Bernd (the late Karen), Christa (Brian), Doris (Guido), Andrew (Christine) and grandchildren Michelle (Dennis), Laura (Dan), Philip, Alex, Jeffrey, Victoria and great-grandchildren Stella, Tessa, Jack, and little Rosie. Predeceased by his youngest brother Rudy in 2008 he is survived by two brothers, Helmut and Arthur. Born in 1924 in Kranichsfelde, Poland, Edmund served in World War II. Edmund and Liesa fled from Communist Eastern Germany in 1953 with two small children, Bernd and Christa, and later went on to have two more children here in Canada, Doris and Andrew. Edmund, who started his trade as a bricklayer went on to run a successful construction business with his brother Helmut for 22 years. Zabel Brother’s Masonry Construction employed as many as 40 workers in the Hamilton area and built many area landmarks that still stand today.In life Ed was always thought of as a kind man, honest, truthful and always fair. He was a successful businessman who accomplished many great things in his life. He was well respected and loved by family and friends. Always willing to help out Ed was also an avid member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for over 50 years. Ed and Liesa enjoyed many years retired together at their Muskoka cottage and their winter home in Arizona. Friends may call at the MARLATT FUNERAL HOME 195 King Street West, Dundas on Thursday December 23, 2010 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church 104 Hughson Street North, Hamilton on Friday December 24, 2010 at 10 a.m. Interment White Chapel Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John's Lutheran Church would be appreciated.
