Edward Joseph Panton was born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 15, 1936, where he was raised by his mom Dorothy Dow Panton (Paterson) before being evacuated in wartime to Kirkcudbright (Kirkcoubrie) with his Granny.
As a youth, he enjoyed cycling through the glens, jive dancing and jazz music. In his early 20’s, Eddie moved to Canada and later helped his family emigrate here, including his mother, his sisters Liz, Mary and Dorothy (with son William) and his brother Billy.
Eddie worked as a steamfitter with UA Local 67, having completed his training in Scotland. Among other companies, he worked at Stelco (Hamilton & Nanicoke), and Petro-Canada in Burlington. At night, he earned his BA in English Literature and Philosophy (McMaster University). Being a bibliophile, he worked in Mills Library before completing his Masters of Library Science at Western University, where he met his wife Linda (Woodside). They wed at McMaster Divinity College in 1970, after which they settled in their forever home in the Westdale neighbourhood. In their early years, they enjoyed cycling in the area and beyond, trips to Sam the Record Man’s to buy classical music especially Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi. They created two lovely girls: Diana and Laurel. After a stint as Super Dad, Eddie returned to industry from which he later retired at 63. On weekends, he played soccer until age 70 with the Burlington Old Timers Soccer Club.
In recent years, Eddie and Linda enjoyed ballroom dancing, going to the gym, breakfast in bed, afternoons on the front porch (which Eddie built) and evenings relaxing with a glass of wine by the fire (for which Eddie would chop the wood). Some of his other loves included books, Liverpool soccer, flowers (particularly blue hydrangeas), bird watching in the garden, listening to Ella, Sinatra and Paul Desmond, hanging out with Anne and Harrison in the backyard, viewing Casablanca numerous times, snoozing with cat Mimi, eating Laurel and Justin's farm produce and attending Diana's jazz concerts.
Eddie will be fondly remembered for his witty sense of humour, keen intellect, artistic sensibility and devotion to his friends and family.
Please join us in remembering Eddie's wonderful life at his memorial visitation on Saturday, May 25th from 2pm - 4pm at Marlatt Funeral Home “Swackhamer Chapel”, 195 King Street West, Dundas.
Whilst flowers are appreciated, the family would also welcome donations to the Westdale Theatre, Pantry Four Paws, the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, or towards the planting of a tree in Edward's memory.
