Ruth was born in Runcorn, England on June 16, 1933, only child of Elizabeth (Clarke) and William Gittins. After training as a nurse and midwife, Ruth came to work at the Hamilton General Hospital in February, 1959. Ruth had a distinguished career, and was well known to many as a skilled and caring nurse and mentor. She received further specialized training at the Montreal Neurological Institute, and returned to the Hamilton General as the neurology nurse clinician. Ruth retired in 1988 to be able to care for her friend, Eleanor Wearring.
Ruth made long lasting friendships and never forgot them. She remembered birthdays and significant events, sending cards that often included a surprise sprinkle of confetti when opened. Ruth is missed from afar by family in England and British Columbia.
Special thanks to those who lovingly cared for and supported Ruth; including her friends at the condo, West Flamborough Presbyterian and Maranatha Free Reformed Churches, Hamilton Civic Hospitals Retired Nursing Association, and also the wonderful healthcare professionals who helped her be independent for as long as possible.
In accordance with Ruth’s instructions, cremation has taken place and there will be a Memorial Service on Wednesday, November 22nd, 3 p.m. at West Flamborough Presbyterian Church, 262 Middletown Road, Hamilton, Ontario L9H 5E1.
Arrangements entrusted to Marlatt Funeral Home – Swackhamer Chapel, Dundas (905) 627-7452.
