Robert Kirkland Shaughnessy, a deeply intelligent and thoughtful man who lived a life full of learning and reflection, passed away on Friday, August 8th. Born in Evanston, Illinois on October 18, 1946, he was the son of William Kirkland Shaughnessy, a copywriter for the Chicago Sun Times, and Marguerite Christina Kircher, a homemaker.
After growing up in the Chicago suburbs, Robert's academic journey took him to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he studied both math and philosophy. There he met many friends and colleagues with whom he stayed in contact throughout his life. After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended Johns Hopkins University in pursuit of a PhD in Philosophy.
His gift for math landed him a job in the insurance industry where he worked on actuary tables and programming code. Later in his career, Robert got his MBA from the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University. Education, for Robert, was a hallmark of his life.
Robert was a faithful and caring son, stepson, brother, and stepbrother. He was particularly close to his late sister, Mary Alice Shaughnessy, who passed away in 1983. After his mother, Marguerite, died in 1971, his father, William, married Alwina Warpe. Robert embraced his new family, especially his stepmother. Following his father's death in 1988, Robert often spent his vacation time in Florida, visiting with his stepmother, Alwina, his stepbrother, Per and close friend, Daphne Jansohn. He is survived by his stepsister Anna E. Warpe-Lillian (husband: Gary Lillian), step nephews Peter and Francis (Alex) Lillian, and stepbrother Per A. Warpe (fiance: Cathy Starnes).
When not working in the insurance business or visiting Florida, Robert found peace on fishing trips to Maine. After retiring, he led a quiet life centered around his passions. He enjoyed reading, listening to his extensive collection of original vinyl records, and writing poetry. Robert will be remembered for his sharp mind and his thoughtful, reflective nature.
Funeral services for Robert will be held at a later date. The D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford has been entrusted with the care of the arrangements. There are no calling hours. For on-line expressions of sympathy to the family, please visit www.desopoeh.com
