George I. Chavez, (Jorge) passed away on Sunday, July 16th, 2023, at the age of 89. After suffering a major stroke on May 7th, he is finally at peace and resting easy. He was a loving and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.
Born in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, MX to Luis and Josefina Chavez on 2/1/1934, the second son of five sons. He became a sign painter and worked with his father and brothers, Sergio and Ricardo, to establish and grow Chavez Signs. He married Martha Rey On 8/11/1956, together they raised daughters, Leticia and Cristina, and son Jorge Luis. They remained married until Martha’s death in 2019. George also had another son, Orlando Chavez.
George had a great love of the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, and sailing. He built his first sailboat from a kayak with modified pontoons and a sail that Martha sewed. Two days before his stroke, he was out in the backyard working on the mast of the sailboat he was rebuilding. He taught his children to appreciate nature and relish the quiet of the lake while holding a fishing rod. He was always glad to share a beer with friends, family, and strangers alike.
George is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ruben and Javier, and his wife of 63 years, Martha. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.
