Humberto "Bert" Berumen

Bert is survived by his four children, Yolanda “Yoli” Deines (Walter); Cynthia Egger; Ruben Berumen (Eileen); and Dr. Kenneth “Ken” Berumen (Julie); 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents Guadalupe Berumen and Francisco Alderete; wife, Olivia Berumen; Son-in-law, Steve Egger and granddaughter Carrie Deines.

He was a lifetime resident of El Paso after his birth on February 5, 1925 in El Paso, Texas and was a graduate of the 1943 class of Bowie High School. Bert served in WWII and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in December, 1945. Upon his return, he began his advanced studies and received his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1952. After 38 years of a long and successful career as an electrical engineer, he retired from Ft. Bliss civil service. He was a proud member of American Legion Post 58 & Elks Lodge 187.

Bert was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Even though his kids lovingly referred to him as “Grumpy”, he had a heart of gold and was loyal to all those who were in his circle. Until his health no longer allowed, Bert enjoyed bowling & dancing with his wife. He also loved camping, golfing, bass fishing & gardening. While he had an extremely humble beginning in the tenements of South El Paso, he left behind a striking legacy of four children with college degrees, good professions and beautiful families. He also leaves delightful memories of times spent with family and friends. By his own hand, together with his loving wife of 55 years, he not only built a warm, strong, united and loving family; but he also took a humble dwelling and converted it into a spacious, comfortable family home. Above all else, he wanted the world to know that he did it his way and he was so very proud of that.

Visitation will be at Martin Funeral Home Central on Sunday, April 29, from 6 to 9 pm with rosary at 7pm. Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 30, at St. Rafael’s at 9:15am, followed by services at Ft. Bliss National cemetery at 10:30am.

The family thanks Dr. Muneer Assi, Dr. Edward Assi and their helpful staff for their compassionate care of our father. Thanks to Maria D. Gonzalez, loyal & compassionate caregiver for 8 yrs., and Justin Carrasco, loyal & compassionate caregiver for 6 yrs. Thanks, also, to all the medical professionals at Encompass Home Health; Envision Hospice Care; especially Jesse, Gloria and Gail; the medical staff at the Eastside VA Clinic and the staff at Sierra Providence Hospitals. We want to express special thanks to our brother Dr. Ken Berumen for taking on the difficult task of being Dad’s medical advocate & our family spokesperson.
