Jesus (Chuy) J. Porras, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 22, 2024 at the age of 86 after a courageous 22-month battle with cancer. He was born in El Paso, Texas on September 3, 1938, to Jose E. and Maria Chavando Porras.
Jesus is survived by his loving wife of almost 33 years, Laurie Porras, and his seven children: Jesus Jr. (Clarissa), Cynthia, Michael, Yvonne (Oswaldo), Hector (Haydee), Stephanie, and Adam (Bonnie), along with 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son, Carlos Porras; his parents; and the mother of six of his children, Maria Hortencia Porras.
From a young age, Jesus immersed himself in the atmosphere of his parents’ tailor shop, learning the intricate art of sewing which he continued to use throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Cathedral High School and attended Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. He devoted his life to serving his country, beginning with active duty in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He then continued his commitment in the Reserves for over a decade. Following his military service, he began a distinguished career at White Sands Missile Range, amassing over 40 years of experience in Civilian Personnel Administration. Throughout his career, he held various personnel management roles, ultimately retiring on February 2, 2006 as the Director of Human Resources.
Throughout his life, Jesus was known for his vibrant spirit and sense of humor, bringing laughter to those around him even in his final days. He was the “king” of dad jokes! As a passionate gun enthusiast, he enjoyed trips to the shooting range with his children. He was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and for over 15 years, he and Laurie shared season tickets to NMSU Aggie basketball games, making countless memories together.
Jesus was also a dedicated baseball coach for his sons, earning the affectionate title of "Coach" from many in the community. He loved playing softball and played even into his late 60’s. He was an avid bowler involved in many leagues over the years and was once awarded the City of El Paso bowling champion. Jesus also enjoyed the outdoors and spent time with his father-in-law as they embarked on multi-day backpacking trips to the Grand Canyon and other southwest locations. In addition to his hobbies, he was an expert tailor, skilled DIYer, always ready to tackle home improvement projects with enthusiasm and expertise. His dedication to family and friends was evident in all that he did.
He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. May his memory be a blessing to all.
A celebration of life will be held to honor Jesus and the joy he brought into the lives of so many.
