He served his country as an U.S. Army Specialist-5 Avionics Mechanic from 1967 to 1973. He completed two tours during the Vietnam War where his duties consisted of Signal Corps Telephone Lineman, Avionics Lineman, and helicopter door gunner. His valor under fire from hostile forces earned him two Bronze Service Stars, an Army Air Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
Following his active military duty, he worked in a civil service position as an Electrical Lineman at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. In the 1980s, Joe moved to Los Angeles, California. His professional experience included working as a Telephone and Electrical Transmission Lineman installing both high voltage aerial and underground lines. In 1985, Joe started his own business, J&S General Services and Promotions, doing work as a general contractor, handyman, and music promotions.
Joe is preceded in death by his father Julian Dominguez, and mother, Esther Valenzuela, whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his daughter, Suzette Cayco; his son-in-law, Mark Cayco; his cherished granddaughters, Eden and Joule Cayco, who miss their “Grandpa Joe;” and his brother, sisters, and cousins. Those who knew Joe would fondly describe him as a wonderful friend – a person always ready to lend a helping hand. His warm smile, humor, and penchant for sharing corny jokes brightened the lives of everyone around him.
The first of two memorial services for Joe will be held in Ocean Park, Santa Monica, California on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 4:00 PM, where his life will be celebrated on the beach, which he most enjoyed, amongst the friends and family in the Los Angeles area. A second memorial service will be held in his hometown of El Paso, Texas on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, 11:00 AM, at Funeraria del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Avenue, El Paso, Texas, 79903. Following the memorial service, Jose will be interred in Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 1:00 PM with military honors.
May Joe’s memory continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
