Jose Gandara was called to the Lord on January 30, 2026. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather whose life was guided by unwavering faith, deep love for his family, and faithful service to his country.
Jose was born on July 3, 1935, in La Union, New Mexico, to Melquiades Gandara and Maria (Villalobos) Gandara. He was a proud 32-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having joined straight out of high school. Throughout his distinguished military career, Jose exemplified leadership, discipline, and honor, living by the Marine Corps motto “Semper Fidelis”—Always Faithful. His loyalty extended beyond his service, as he remained deeply faithful to his family, God, and country throughout his life.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Jose continued his service to the nation for an additional 18 years as an Air Interdiction Supervisor, further reflecting his strong work ethic and commitment to protecting others.
Jose is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Concepcion Gandara; his children, Monica Gandara Merritt and her husband Mark Merritt, and Carmen Gandara and her husband Antonio Cruz; and his grandchildren, Amelia Gandara and her husband Alex Frommeyer, and Joseph Gandara. He was preceded in death by his son, Jose Angel Gandara.
A man of strength, humor, and quiet wisdom, Jose was a role model and mentor whose guidance and kindness touched all who knew him. His devotion to his family was the cornerstone of his life, and the love he shared will remain in their hearts forever.
Jose Gandara will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were blessed to know him.
VIsitation will be Monday, February 16, from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Funeraria Del Angel Central (Martin Funeral Home), 3839 Montana Avenue, El Paso, Texas 79903. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, February 17, at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 4805 Byron Street, El Paso, Texas 79930; with interment to follow in Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Avenue, El Paso, Texas 79906, with full military honors.
