

Joe “Pepe” Olivas Jr., 84 passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. After serving his country as a member of the United States Navy he was employed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, White Sands Missile Range, N.M., and Fort Bliss, Texas, retiring in 1985 after 35 yrs. He graduated in the Class of 1944 from Bowie High School and was a proud and loyal bear. In his younger days he loved playing softball and later enjoyed golfing and playing cards with his buddies at the Ascarate Golf Course. Pepe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nena; his son, Joey; and grandson, James. Mr. Olivas is survived by his daughters, Sheila Whaley, Cathy Zahn and Judy Oehlers; his sons, Jimmy Olivas and Marty Olivas; nine grandchildren; and 11 great –grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5pm to 9pm Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 at Del Angel Martin Funeral Home, 3839 Montana Ave., with rosary service beginning at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 9:45 a.m., Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1050 N. Clark Dr. Funeral Services will follow at 11 a.m., at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Andy Whaley, Mark Saenz, Eddie Benavidez, Al Mendez, Jason Martin, and Andrew Villarreal. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Neder and Frank De La Rosa.
