Mel was born on August 7th, 1959 to Daniel and Gloria Carreon. He spent his elementary years at St. Joseph’s School. After he graduated from Austin High School in 1977, he went on to get a BA in History at UTEP.
In 1986, Mel met fellow teacher Elizabeth Gutierrez while working at Holy Trinity. Some might say their meeting was density- I mean destiny. After a prank war gone awry, Mel and Liz were married in 1991 and went on to have two children: Mia Francesca and Skyler Timothy.
He was a family man, with a profound impact on the many families he was a part of: the Carreon family-- his own, the Gutierrez family--his wife’s; his friends and classmates at St. Joseph and Austin High School; the students and staff of Holy Trinity, St. Raphael, Cathedral High School, and St. Patrick Elementary; the staff and visitors of Recreation and Senior Centers across El Paso, the many volunteers and performers of El Paso Kids-N-Co. and his co-workers with the city of El Paso.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his children Mia and Skyler, his siblings, Antimo Carreon, Regina Medrano, and Noe Carreon, nieces, nephews and his grand-pets, Kiki, Bruce, Rocket, Dottie, and Raya.
